Shang Sumdo to Stok Khang-Ri via Markha Valley, an adventure that leads you into the heart of the scenic wilderness of Markha Valley. An exciting combination of adventurous walks with a climb to Stok Khang-Ri, one of the most striking peaks of the Ladakh Himal range. This will be a great adventure compared to other normal trekking and climbing. Our route leads to remote, hidden pockets of Markha Valley on the least ventured corners by only a few trekkers.

Shang Sumdo to Stok Khang-Ri via Markha Valley, a wonderful blend with an exciting sightseeing tour around Leh and beyond. Allows you to get acclimatized by staying in one place for a few days at 3,500 m, the height of Leh. In the capital town of Ladakh, the tour takes you to famous places of great historical and cultural interest.

Visiting famed monasteries of Thiksey, Shey with an interesting tour around Leh and the market areas. The very best way to get familiarized with the local culture and customs of great ancient heritage. The tour includes an exciting drive over one of the world’s highest motorable passes at 5,602 m and 18, 379 feet high.

From Leh after an enjoyable time, then our adventure from Shang Sumdo to Stok Khang-Ri via Markha Valley begins. On route visit another famous historical Hemis monastery, established in 1672 by King Sengge Namgyal of Ladakh. The drive continues to Shang Sumdo within Hemis National Park and the entrance to scenic Markha Valley. The home to exotic wildlife like elusive snow-leopard, mountain goats, and antelopes, including various mammals and birds.

From Hemis and Martselang village, our adventurous walks for nearly two weeks start heading towards inner Markha Valley. On an alternative route, where few adventures dare to venture, heading towards the high pass of Kongmoru-La at

5,260 m. Where the high outer trail follows away from the main route to Hankar and then to Markha, Sara, and Skiu. Then approaching Stok Khang-Ri base camp from the northern side within a complete wilderness of inner Markha Valley.

On reaching the main base camp right beneath the stunning peak of Stok Khang-Ri, with time for preparation for the ascent. Our expert guide will lead you on the safe path, with full support on difficult sections.

The climb to Stok Khang-Ri at 6, 153 m / 20, 187 feet high is not a technical peak. However, all climbers must be equipped with necessary gear like ice-axe, good climbing boots, and crampons, besides personal warm clothing.

The grade of the climb is set as ‘F’ which means Facial Easy, a straightforward steep climb on snow and ice. A climb without technical difficulty, all the way to the summit, sometimes in deep snow condition main ropes are required. For a safe climb and descend to the base camp, after getting fully organized, then towards the summit of Stok Khang-Ri.

On achieving the main goal and highlights of the adventure, facing a superb panorama of the surrounding snow peak range. Views of Ladakh Himal to Zaskar as far towards Karakorum Himalaya range, after rejoicing moment back to base camp. On completing all major destinations and then drive back to Leh, after walking past Stok village. At Leh our wonderful adventure on Shang Sumdo to Stok Khang-Ri via Markha Valley completes. Then on scenic air-borne from Leh to Delhi for connecting flights homeward bound, after a memorable experience at wild Ladakh.

Best seasons for Shang Sumdo to Stok Khang-Ri via Markha valley:

The best time for this wonderful adventure is from the late spring, summer, and early autumn seasons, late spring from April and May, and autumn/fall begins from September to October, where November month is fine but chances of much snow and freezing temperatures.

April & May to August are fine clear days most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes. Autumn another best time for the trek, climb, and tour around Ladakh with a fine clear day. But days are shorter due to sunlight hours can be cold, especially in the morning, and night times with clear and bright starry nights. Chances of snowfall during the trek and climb.

For interested people can visit Ladakh for a tour, trek, and climb during summer times of June to August also. As Ladakh falls within rain shadow area, where monsoon dark rain clouds blocked by the great Himalayas. That is why Ladakh most areas are dry, arid with less rainfall.

Religion and Culture:

Ladakh and the North West Himalaya are populated by Ladakhi people descendants of a mixed tribal race of Mons of North India, and Dards of Baltistan with Mongols of Central Asia. History shows the Mons were the first immigrants, followed by Dards who founded different settlements in the Indus Valley.

80 % of Ladakh natives are interwoven to strong Buddhist religion and culture, similar to its Tibetan predecessors enriched with ancient Buddhist heritage, having many monasteries of great historical and religious significance.

Day 1: Arrival at Leh / Ladakh 3, 500 m Kushok Bakula Rimpoche airport and transfer to hotel.

Morning after a short scenic of an hour flight to Leh from Delhi, on arrival at Leh, Ladakh Kushok Bakula Rimpoche. As you head outside the air terminal, our staff and guide receives you for short drive in the heart of Leh town to your Hotels. Afternoon free at leisure, optional walk to the center of Leh and its market.

Day 2 : A day in Leh for acclimatization and tour of Leh former palace, Shanti Stupa overnight in View Point Hotel.

At Leh, for acclimatization and for exciting tours at places of interest, Leh has a vast range of main bazaars on the street with colorful local fruits and vegetable vendors. The streets are busy with roadside restaurants, cafes, and craft shops.
The old Leh Palace is perched on a hilltop above the town overlooking the Leh bazaar and the town. The white Peace (Shanti) Stupa stands close by on a high hill which is worth a visit as well for views of Leh and the valley. Witness the world’s highest Polo ground located within the town’s main bus station, The rest of the day is free at leisure to browse around Leh, Ladakh’s capital.

Day 3: At Leh tour of Shey, Thiksey Monastery to Khardung-La.

The morning after breakfast, a full-day tour taking a drive beyond Leh visit to Thiksey Gompa built in 16th Century, situated on a hilltop. The monastery is enriched with Tibetan-style books, a huge Buddha statue, and excellent works of art.
An exciting drive to reach one of the world’s highest motorable passes at Khardung-La which is a 40 km driving distance from Leh, at an altitude of 5, 602 m / 18,379 feet.
The drive to this high pass to experience the highest altitude as well a good support for acclimatization. Enjoy grand panoramic views of the Zanskar Range beyond the Indus Valley, with Stok Khang-Ri standing out prominently as one of the higher peaks within the range. The view extends as far as Eastern Karakoram peaks, after taking a warm refreshing drink at the pass, gasping in the thin atmosphere, return drive to Leh. But before an interesting visit to ruined Shey Palace, once a summer palace of the pre-Tibetan kings. Shey and its fort also known as Lachen Palkar Palace, the massive nine-story stone structure lies at the base of the Tsemo ridge and towers over the old town. Built by King Senge Namgyal from the 15th to 17th century in a Tibetan style. The palace monastery houses a large, bronze, blue-haired Buddha statue, and then drive to Leh hotel for overnight.

Day 4 : Drive to Hemis Gompa and Martselang trek to Shang Sumdo 3,680 m-02 hrs.

Having a good breakfast at the hotel, getting ready for trek departure towards Shang Sumdo within Markha Valley, and climbing Stok Khang-Ri peak.
An interesting drive through farm country to Hemis village and its large religious complex. Hemis, is one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries in Ladakh with more than 150 monks; an annual Hemis festival is held. The monastery stands in a gorge surrounded by mountain scenery, built in the 18th Century.

Hemis Monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist monastery of the Drokpa Lineage, in Hemis, Ladakh, India. Situated 45 km from Leh, it was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal. The annual Hemis festival takes place in honor of the great Padmasambhava, a Guru of the 6th century who reformed Tibetan Buddhism and the founder of the Nyingma sect. After an interesting tour a short drive to Marteselang
as the ride leads close to the Hemis National Park, which is also a good habitation of endangered snow leopards and other wildlife. From Marteselang a small settlement of Yak herders, where our first-day walk starts for a few hours to Shang Sumdo, with a first overnight in a tented camp backed by camping crews and chef and pack animals to carry the camping gear and foods for the whole trek and climb.

Day 5 : Trek to Chuskirmo 3, 915 – 03 hrs.

Another short day, after a leisurely morning breakfast prepared by our camping cook and kitchen staff. After breakfast a gentle walk on a flat valley path to reach Chuskirmo, a small settlements of cattle herders and nomads.
Overnight camp is set on a grassy meadow with grand views of distant snow-capped peaks. Afternoon enjoy a short acclimatization hike around, with chances of spotting some wild-life.

Day 6 : Trek to Nimaling 4, 720 m via Kongmaru-La Pass 5,260 m-07 hrs.

From here onward into a remote and isolated country far north of Ladakh’s high valley plains, as the route leads towards desolated and scenic landscapes to reach a small place of Chogdo around a cattle herder temporary camp.
After a refreshing stop, continue the long day walk to the base of Kongmaru-La Pass, a steep climb for a few hours uphill to a ridge then on top of Kongmaru-La, the highest point of the trek. Rewards fantastic panorama of surrounding snow peaks with Kang Yatse at 6,400 m high, after a tough climb then downhill to Nimaling, a small settlement of Yak and cattle herders. Overnight camp is set on a level ground with a huge green grassy meadow.

Day 7 : Trek to Hankar 4, 030 m -05 hrs.

Compared to the previous day, walking today is average hours to Hankar’s isolated settlement of cattle herders. As walk follows on wide terrain past temporary shades of Yak men and nomads with a gentle climb for some hours then reaching a small place of Tachungtse. Time permitting stop here for a dry picnic lunch, finding shade against the cool wind, afternoon a short walk of a few hours downhill to overnight at Hankar, camp is set on a wide field close to the small settlement of Hankar.

Day 8: Trek to Markha 3, 720 m-06 hrs.

After being around the wild country of northern Ladakh, a morning walk on the flat level path with short ups and downs to Umlung by mid-day. A summer pasture and grazing ground of Nomads and local Yak herders of Stok and Nimaling villagers.
Enjoy rest at Umlung a steep climb for a short hour and then on a winding path as the walk follows downhill to a desolate and remote Markha village for overnight camp, on the wide grassy field.

Day 9 : Trek to Skiu 3, 400 m – 07 hrs.

From this pleasant campsite, the adventure leads towards the inner valley of Markha towards the Northern areas of Skiu and Stok. Walk on a gradual path on a high ridge with short ups and downs to a small area at Sara, after a refreshing rest. The trail follows for another 3-4 hours to Skiu, at first on a gentle wide path to a high ridge facing grand views of surrounding white peaks with Stok Khang-Ri in the south. From this high point descend to a gorge, and then climb for an hour or more to Skiu, a remote windswept settlement directly north from our next day route to Stok Khang-Ri areas. Overnight camp on a wide-open field facing grand views of rolling high hills with snow peaks.

Day 10: Trek to Shingo 4, 267 m-05 hrs.

After enjoying a wonderful and exciting adventure around pure wilderness and off the beaten tracks, from here walk leads to other hidden trails of Markha Valley to join the main trail at Stok Khang-Ri area. Route follows the southeast direction to Shingo from Skiu on a hidden trail, walk on the high ridges enclosed within high snow-capped peaks, all the way to Shingo a nomad’s temporary summer camps where our overnight camp is set.

Day 11 : Trek to Rumbak 4, 038 m via Ganda-la Pass 4, 900 m-07 hrs.

An adventure on forgotten trails, hardly a few adventurers use this hidden route which is quite an interesting walk crossing Ganda-La Pass. Facing the grand views of
Stok Khang-RI rare East Face. As most trekkers and climb see the peaks from the southern direction, this will be a special view. Follow the faint path on a high ridge till the walk ends on a small plateau where our camps are pitched for overnight halt.

Day 12 : Trek to Chortenchan 4, 380 m via Stok-La Pass 4, 900 m-07 hrs.

The morning trek leads due south and then crosses a scenic Stok-La Pass where the rail leads to a junction of Spituk, Stok, and Mankarmo. An enjoyable trek on least trekked area before our walk leads on the main path of Spituk and Stok valleys.
Walk on gradually up then traverse Stok-La Pass towards Chortenchan, then end the long of the day, within a nice meadow for overnight camp around pure wilderness.

Day 13 : Trek to Stok Base Camp 4, 969 m – 04 hrs.

After enjoying the adventure around the hidden areas of Markha, the morning walk continues up the valley making a steep climb to the base of Stok Kangri at 4,969 m. The walking is shorter compared to previous days, as the route leads within windswept terrain and then reaches the base of Stok Khang-Ri, enjoy the free afternoon at leisure for a short walk, after getting organized in the campsite.

Day 14: Free day at base camp for acclimatization, and practice climb.

A rest day or exploration day, visit the glacier to see the route for the next day’s climb to Stok Khang-Ri afternoon our guide will brief us with information regarding the route of the climb and other safety measures. Here take a hike in the side valleys for a few hours for acclimatization and return to camp for lunch. Rest of the day at leisure preparation for the climb to Stok Khang-Ri Peak summit.

Day 15: Climb Stok Khang-Ri 6,153 m and back to base camp.

Starting early at the break of dawn for the climb to the summit of Stok Khang-Ri, depending on snow conditions heeding slowly with care following our lead expert guide. When the path is clear with rocks and dirt trail then most likely no need for crampons as climbs take you over scree and boulders, heading up towards a south ridge.

Close to 460 m high ridge stretches to an exciting and superbly exposed summit. After a great climb without much technical but with a steep and very straightforward haul. Reaching the top is rewarded with superb scenery of the Ladakh high valley plateau, facing views of the Zaskar and Karakoram Himalaya range. Includes distant view of Leh, after a pleasant photo session and perhaps a bite with pack lunch, and then descend towards all the way to base camp for last overnight in a tented camp, after a great adventurous day.

Day 16: Trek to Stok Village and drive to Leh- 06 hrs.

Clear the camp, and take care of garbage leaving the camp site as pristine as it were. After a marvelous time in complete wilderness and achieving our goal and highlight of the adventure of a lifetime experience. Completing packing, then set off heading back to Stok village to continue trek down the valley towards the Stok village. On reaching Stok village after more than five hours walks, our transport will be at disposable for a scenic drive to Leh, for last overnight at Ladakh.

Day 17: Depart for Delhi to connect respective international flights.

Depending upon the flight time, the guide and staff transfer you for a short drive to the airport for a flight to Delhi after a memorable experience on Shang Sumdo to Stok Khang-Ri Peak via Markha Valley adventure.

  • Age is no bar in all our trekking adventures, we have space for all ages from children from 5 to 70 years old person, as long one is physically, medically, and mentally fit. In treks that involve high passes of over 5,000 meters then we consider the age groups.

  • Most places around Ladakh due to its remote and isolated region, trekking with tented camping. Staying in the lodge where available, but using tented camping on most treks and climbing peaks in Ladakh.

    Few trekking regions have good lodge facilities with excellent, neat, and cozy lodges. During camping our cook will provide excellent home-cooked food as per the areas of trekking. Trekkers will be delighted to find food from Continental, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Tibetan, and Nepali meals as well fresh bakery products in some time. All meals are cooked in a healthy and hygienic manner using LPG cooking gas or in kerosene stoves. Meals are served in a large dining tent as per the size of the group, we carry gas lamps to light the dining tents.

  • Our guides are fully prepared for this kind of situation, we carry medical kit and the guides have gone through yearly medical training if it’s very serious needs to be evacuated by any means of transport like a helicopter the safe and quickest way(for this reason one should have strong travel/ medical insurance to cover this extra expenses) we will contact our helicopter companies to uplift and evacuate and then bring back to the nearest hospital and medical care or in Leh depending upon distance and circumstances.

  • Depending upon the area of trekking routes as Ladakh is a wild country of high hills and downhill, so on a normal trek, there are many ups and downs walking with few gradual trails. Trekking routes encounter several mid hills and traditional villages full of culture and religions with shrines, monasteries with prayer symbol like Mani, and stupa along the walks, and villagers are friendly and greet you with smiles.

  • Internet, Wi-Fi, and phone are available around every village and large settlement on route main trekking areas. Sometimes the internet and WI-FI are slow and might be disturbing due to weather-wise.

    As well depending on the landscapes around the gorge and deep valleys, the internet and WI-FI will not reach the areas. One must be prepared and wait until one reaches certain high places, where communication works.

    Electricity available run by hydro-power, as well solar power nearly in all main villages on route trekking. Only around remote areas where camping is required, will not have electricity facilities or Wi-Fi for some days.

    At every lodge charging fees includes per hour and per item, and the price differs from one place to another.

  • Hot / Cold showers are available in every lodge where you stay overnights mainly around popular trekking routes. All lodges charge some amount for using hot-showers in all standard lodges. But on camping days there will be no hot showers available, but we can provide a shower tent on request.
