At present, over the past few years, the peak of Kang Yatse II is drawing more
visitors. The peak is of moderate climbing adventure with the least technical effort to reach on top Kang Yatse II summit.
Brown Bear Trail offers this elusive and grand adventure to Kang Yatse Peak II Climb, starting and ending at Leh. The capital town of Ladakh province where the average altitude is 3, 500 m high, is populated by a unique tribe of people.
The native of Ladakh are Dards, an ancient tribe of the Aryan race, with a mixture of Tibetan and Mongols. Most Ladakh people are interwoven with Buddhism, similar to Tibetan heritage and cultures, the town and villages, are steeped with monasteries.
From the lovely town of Leh, begins our adventure heading due North around remote parts of the country to Zingchen. A small town, located on a windswept
terrain, which is the main settlement of Markha valley. Situated within Hemis National Park en route to Stok village near the famous and popular Stok Kangri peak.
From the Stok village heading towards Stok-La base camp to Mankarmo and Gangpoche to cross another pass over Matho-La. The walk traverses from one
scenic valley to another beautiful area to Shang-Phu and Chuskirmo and crosses high Kangmaru-La. Which is above 5,140 m /16, 863 feet high to reach a nice small yak herder settlement at Nimaling. Heading closer to our final destination at base camp, beneath the towering peaks of Kang Yatse Peak II.
Enjoy the free day for a short hike and climb on snow and ice as practice exercise before the big ascent. Next early morning before the break of dawn, follow our expert guide, climbing on a snow slope. Having a few refreshing breaks as the altitude rises till you reach on top of Kang Yatse Peak-II. Stand on the highest point of the adventure overlooking surrounding snow-capped peaks. Facing the grand vista as far towards Zanskar and Karakoram Mountain range, feeling in high spirit descent to base camp. From the base camp, the next early morning walk to a small yak herder shelter at Chokdo. Where an exciting and most interesting drive leads to Leh for the last overnight in Ladakh. Outline Itinerary:
Day 01: Arrival in Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpoche Airport 3,500 m and transfer
to hotel.
Day 02: In Leh for acclimatization and tour of Leh capital town, visit of
Chomo Gompa and Chokhang.
Day 03: Morning drive to Alchi and Shey Gompa / monasteries and back to
Leh, with leisure evening.
Day 04: Drive to Zingchen 3,380 m and trek to Stok-La Base Camp 4,100 m
approx. 32 km drive of 2-3 hours and 3-4 hours walks.
Day 05: Trek from Stok-La base camp to Mankarmo 4,375 m via stok la 4900 m. 5-6 hours.
Day 06: Trek to Gangpoche 4,420 m via Matho-La 4,896 m -06 hours.
Day 07: Trek to Shangphu 4,350 m via Shang-La pass 4,940 m -06 hrs.
Day 08: Trek to Chuskirmo 4,140 m-05 hours.
Day 09: Trek to Nimaling 4,730 m via Kongmaru-La pass 5,140 m -07 hrs.
Day 10: Trek to Kang Yatse Peak II base camp 5,150 m – 04 hrs.
Day 11: At base camp for acclimatization and short climbing exercise.
Day 12: Ascent of Kang Yatse Peak II, 6,250 m / 20,600 feet high.
Descent to Base Camp after more than 9 hours of tough climb.
Day 13: Clear the camp and trek to Chokdo and drive to Leh for overnight.
Approx. 06 hours walks and 2 hours’ drive.
Day 14: Depart for Delhi from Leh and to homeward bounds.
Itinerary Details
Day 1 : Day 01: Arrival in Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpoche Airport 3,500 m and transfer to hotel.
Morning after a short scenic of an hour flight to Leh from Delhi, on arrival at Leh, Ladakh Kushok Bakula Rimpoche. As you head outside the air terminal, our staff and guide receives you for short drive in the heart of Leh town to your Hotels.Afternoon free at leisure, optional walk to the center of Leh and its market.
Day 2 : Day 02: In Leh for acclimatization and tour of Leh capital town, visit of Chomo Gompa and Chokhang.
At Leh, for acclimatization and for exciting tour at places of interest, Leh has a vast range of main bazaar on the street colorful local fruits and vegetables vendors. The streets are busy with roadside restaurant, cafes and craft shops. The old Leh Palace stands on the top of the high hill overlooking the Leh city and its valley. The white Peace (Shanti) Stupa stands nearby high on hill which is worth a visit for the great views of Leh. The world’s highest Polo ground located beyond the main bus station, rest of the day free at leisure to browse around Leh, Ladakh capital.
Day 03: Morning drive to Alchi and Shey Gompa / monasteries and back to Leh, with leisure evening.
Morning after breakfast, a full day tour taking a drive to Hemis, one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries in Ladakh with more than 150 monks; an annual Hemis festival is held. The monastery, stands in gorge surrounded by mountain scenery, built in 18th Century. On the way back to Leh visit Thiksey Gompa built in 16th Century, situated on a hill top. The monastery enriched with Tibetan-style books, a huge Buddha statue and excellent works of arts. Last stop on the way back to Leh, tour of ruined Shey Palace once a summer
palace of the pre-Tibetan kings. Shey and its fort also known as Lachen Palkar Palace, the massive nine-story stone structure lies at the base of the Tsemo ridge and towers over the old town. Built by King Senge Namgyal during 15th till 17th Centaury in a Tibetan style.
From here drive to Alchi farm village a tour of 10th Century Alchi monastery of great religious and historical interest. After a great drive and tour of famous areas of Ladakh and its old religious and historical monasteries drive back to Leh for overnight.
Day 04: Drive to Zingchen 3,380 m and trek to Stok-La Base Camp 4,100 m approx. 105 km drive of 2-3 hours and 3-4 hours walks.
Leaving early morning, drive to Zingchen, a small settlement with few guest houses, and trek towards Stok village, visit the Stok Palace on route. A pleasant trek passing several homesteads and numerous ruins of old fortresses and up to the valley then trek on the wide plateau to reach Stok-La for first overnight in tented camp after 4 hours hour walk, the camp at 4,100 m.
Day 05: Trek from Stok-La base camp to Mankarmo 4,375 m. 5-6 hours.
Trek continues from Stok-La base camp up the valley making a steep climb over a
dry terrain, starts fairly gradual but becomes steeper approach the pass. From the high ridge, the trail descends along the mountainside with ups and down walks reaching Stok. A small settlement with a summer pasture, the heading little further to Mankarmo to set up our camp. Before heading Matho-La Pass towards the next scenic valley around Kang Yatse Peak II. Enjoy the grand views of Stok Kangri, rest of the afternoon relax and enjoy the surrounding beautiful scenery.
Day 06: Trek to Gangpoche 4,420 m via Matho-La 4,896 m -06 hours.
Adventure today, leads to a moderate long day walk on leaving Mankarmo to
isolated and hidden area of Gangpoche. As walk leads on gradual path for short while with steep climb for few hours on top Matho-La Pass. Enjoy the grand vista of surrounding high peaks with Stok Khang-Ri towards North East. After enjoying the spectacular panorama, a slow downhill to cross a stream to a grazing pasture field. As walk leads to a short climb to a ridge, where our overnight camp is set at Gangpoche. After a long pleasant day and crossing several icy streams which is causes delay and making a longer day walks.
Day 07: Trek to Stok Base Camp 4, 969 m via Matho-La 4, 900 m-06 hrs.
From Gangpoche after a short stride leads to cross a river, and then walk gently up to a valley for another hour. Where path comes across another river to wade. As route leads to steep climb steadily across a wide valley heading towards Matho-La Pass. After skirting a hillside enjoying views of Matho Golep and Stok Kang-Ri. From the pass down to level path following the river with short steep climb to the base of Stok Kang-Ri at 4,969 m.
The walk can be quite strenuous due high altitude within arid and windswept terrain, on reaching the base, right beneath towering South Face of Stok Khang-Ri. After setting up the camp with free afternoon at leisure for short walk.
Day 08: Trek to Chuskirmo 4,140 m-05 hours.
Adventure get closer towards our final destination as walk follows along the river side around the scenic valley. On leaving the Stok areas reaching close to high Kongmaru-La pass, facing grand views of distant white peaks. A moderate distance walks past several smaller temporary settlements of Yak and cattle herder to Chuskirmo for overnight camping. A small village of Chuskirmo with parachute tents, serving as shops and tea-house as well for cozy accommodation.
Day 09: Trek to Nimaling 4,730 m via Kongmaru-La pass 5,140 m -07 hrs.
From Chuskirmo onward into far remotest part of Ladakh around isolated country of high valley plains. The walk starts heading towards desolated and scenic landscapes reaching at the base of Kongmaru-La Pass. After a refreshing stop, continue walk with slow climb to a high ridge on top Kongmaru-La. Enjoy the grand close views of Kang Yatse peak towards south west, and then head down and up to Nimaling for overnight camp. Located on a wide valley close to Kongmaru-La Pass, with closest view of Kang Yatse-II peak.
A beautiful valley with large tented camp of Yak herder, which also serves as tea- house. The local herder bring their cattle for grazing during June to September. For interested people can take a short hike to the base of Kang Yatse glacier a few
hours walk from the camp at Nimaling.
Day 10: Trek to Kang Yatse Peak II base camp 5,150 m – 04 hrs.
After a pleasant overnight in nice valley, morning an interesting walk as route diverts from Nimaling valley. As the trail leads to a faint path, almost invisible only an expert guide can trace the right route. The walk leads towards Kang Yatse II Peak base camp. Coming across where Langtang Chu which flows from Zalung Karpo-La, covered in rocks of old moraine. Finally the day ends on reaching Kang Yatse-II base camp for overnight and for the exciting adventure climb next day after having an acclimatization day.
Day 11: At base camp for acclimatization and short climbing exercise.
njoy an extra free and leisure day after continues walk for several days, can hike around at view-points. From the nearby hills one can enjoy views of Twin Lakes with Kang Yatse I and II peaks, includes Dzo Jongo East and West peaks. Rest of the day practice climb up the hills for better acclimatization for next early ascent to Kang Yatse Peak-II.
Day 12: Ascent of Kang Yatse Peak II, 6,250 m / 20,600 feet high.
Descent to Base Camp after more than 9 hours of tough climb. A Big Day! Start early for the long climb to the summit of Kang Yatse-II peak, follow our expert lead guide. The route leads to a steep rise of 1,100 meters to reach 6, 250 m high on top Kang Yatse II summit. Climb heads over loose moraine and scree of rocks, one of the main obstacle to secure the foot en-route.Using support of trekking pole or ice-axe, as climb heads to a crevasse covered with snow. Depending upon the level of snowfall, sometimes needs to climb with support of a fixed rope for safety measures.
After a gruesome struggle for hours then reach on top of Kang Yatse II Peak. Take a rest and enjoy the 360 degree panorama of Zanskar range with Karakoram and surround high snow-capped peaks. Includes views of beautiful valley down below. If the day is crystal clear one can views all the way to K2 peak in the far north-west. The world’s 2 nd highest, the views also includes some mountains across the border of Tibet. After a great successful climb, achieving the final goal and highlights, descend carefully to base camp.
Day 13: Clear the camp and trek to Chokdo and drive to Leh for overnight. Approx. 06 hours walks and 2 hours’ drive.
After completing all the tough walks, and clearing the camp, packing all the gears
and garbage. Return journey downhill on rolling red hills made of canyon and
eroded cliffs. As walk leads to further descent with short few ups and down to
Chokdo a small village, situated around Shang Valley. From Chakdo, drive on a rough dirt track past Shang Sumdo, then on downhill to reaching on the main highway near Hemis village and the monastery. From here another few hour drive brings you to Leh, for last overnight at Ladakh, enjoy rest of the evening at leisure and browse around the streets of Leh.
Day 14: Depart for Delhi from Leh and to homeward bounds.
Depending upon flight time for Delhi, our guide and staff transfers you to the airport for scenic flight to Delhi. After a memorable adventure and experience on Kang Yatse-II Trek and Climb.
