Best seasons for Shey Shikhar Peak and Dolpo Trek:

The best time for this long and wonderful adventure is in the spring and autumn seasons, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are shorter with sun-light hours, morning, late afternoon, and nighttime temperatures drop to freezing cold around the higher region with the bright starry night sky. Chances of snow on trails as well on passes. The climb to Shey Shikhar Peak can be visited during monsoon time of June to August also, as Dolpo area falls within rain shadow area. Where southern monsoon dark rain clouds blocked by high Himalayan mountain range that is why the area is mostly dry and arid like a moon-scape.

Religion and Culture:

Far North West Nepal around Jumla and Dolpo districts populated by Bhotia and Hindu Thakuri, Roka Chettries the mid-hill tribes. The higher region around Dolpo, inhabited by the Bhot people of Tibetan origin, follows strong Buddhism religion as well Bon a pre-Buddhism sect with an age-old culture similar to their predecessors Tibetan. On this trek and climb you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments with old monasteries of great cultural and religious interest

Overview

Shey Shikhar Peak Trek & Climb, an adventure of a lifetime experience around the far wild-west of Nepal Himalaya. A beautiful area of Dolpo, where walk and climb lead to far hidden corners around scenic country of Lower Dolpo.

 

Shey Shikhar Peak, one of the least ventured and climbed mountains within the Kanjiruwa Himal range. Shey Shikhar Peak rises at 6,139 m /20, 141 feet high above Phoksundo Lake around scenic areas of Lower Dolpo.

 

A stunning peak towers high in between Kanjiruwa-II, which is at 6,612 m, and Tsho Karpo Kang 6,557 m. The first ascent by Japanese mountaineer Katsuhito Fujikawa in 1971 before the peak was opened for the climb in 2002.

 

The climbing grade is classified as PD + ‘Per Difficule with plus, a straight-forward climb with some technical difficulty to encounter. The climb leads over ice, rocks, and snow slopes with a vertical face of 50-60° angle, to reach the summit.

The grading from French and Swiss Alpine Climbing Classification Systems, which is popular worldwide on an alpine-style climb.

Shey Shikhar Peak Trek & Climb begins with a sweeping scenic flight to Nepalgunj city airport, situated Far South West Nepal. Where another connecting flight reaches Dolpo at Jhupal airport, where our adventure starts heading towards our major destination.

 

The journey leads through rural villages with tended farm terraces then reaches Dunai, a large town and headquarter of the Dolpo area. From Dunai heading towards farm country with ups and downhill, past nice typical hill villages of Chepka and Samdua. Leaving the main trail heading higher to isolated corners as the route diverts from Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo village routes.

 

The adventure follows to a last remote village at Daja, altitude gains slowly as walk leads to cooler higher country. The walk leads closer towards Kanjiruwa Himal range, reaching a glacial small lake at Chhowamb Tal, after following Pu-Phu Khola/stream. From here short distance to set our base camp right beneath towering Shey Shikhar Peak within rocky and icy moraine.

 

At base camp staying for some days with full preparations for the climb, getting busy ferrying camping equipment. Including carrying food to higher advanced camps, as the climb to the summit leads to some technical difficulties.

 

After having acclimatization days with practice exercise and checking the best possible accessible and safer routes to the summit. On a clear fine morning start the big day of the adventure, a climb leads to a steep crest above.

As climb leads to a narrow section stretches a kilometer long, with precipitous drops on both sides of a ridge. Finally reaching the summit of Shey Shikhar Peak, after a tough strenuous struggle, rewards with spectacular scenery.

 

From the top feeling in high spirits enjoy a glorious vista of snow-capped peaks that surrounds. Overlooking beautiful landscape scenery far and wide areas of Dolpo and its dramatic country with deep valleys and rolling hills.

 

Feeling on top of the world, descend safely to High Camp and then at base camp for the return journey. After a great feat ascent of Shey Shikhar Peak taking an alternative route to Dunai and Jhupal. The journey continues heading towards beautiful turquoise-colored Phoksundo Lake and visiting a nice Ringmo village enriched with age-old culture.

 

The adventure then heads to cross over Baga-La 5,350 m and Numa-La 5,309 m high to lovely Tokyu, a large village. One of the largest settlements around Dolpo, with time here to observe local traditional life of great cultural interest. After Tokyu walk leads on a wide long valley of Dho-Tarap to another exciting village of Tarakot.

 

Slowly our adventurous treks come to an end heading towards Dunai and back at Jhupal for the last overnight around Dolpo. Next morning a scenic flight brings you to Kathmandu, completing our memorable adventure on Shey Shikhar Peak Trek and Climb.

Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, received by our guides and staff for short transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city.

Checking your lovely room, and after a refreshing rest join with other members of
Shey Shikhar Peak Trek & Climb. Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, do’s and don’ts, local culture, as well camping, foods and of lodges, camping on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

After an exciting day tour back to hotel for next day trek and climb preparation and with last minute briefing from your leader and guide.

As per flight time for Nepalgunj transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for sweeping 50 mins flight to Far South West Nepal at Nepalgunj city, a warm semi-tropical climate area close to Indian border on reaching at Nepalgunj transfer to a nice hotel within the city area, with time for short walk around.

After an early breakfast transfer to Nepalgunj airport for a short connecting flight to Jhupal airport in Dolpo. Another scenic flight with views of Western Himalaya range of peaks, on landing at Jhupal received by our trekking staff and then board in a vehicle for short drive to Dunai for overnight stop. Dunai the headquarter town of Dolpo district with many simple lodge for overnight stay here time for short walk around Dunai, an interesting place to witness the local culture of both Hindu and Buddhism religion and custom.

From Dunai, walk through market to cross a bridge over Thulo Bheri River and then climb over a ridge top above Phoksundo River valley, facing views of Kagmara peak.
On reaching the top downhill past farm villages lined with walnut trees, as walk heads close to Dhera a small cattle herders settlements. From here short climb towards Raha-Gaon village of Thakuri a Hindu tribe.
Walk downhill to a forested area to Chepkpa, a small farm village for first overnight stop and camping.

After a pleasant overnight in Chepkpa, close to Ankhe village walk starts with short climb, then descend to a river bank, as climb continues on leaving the forest behind, and then downhill to forest as walk heads upstream to Ryajik village, journey leads further to Samdua for overnight stop near the entrance of Phoksundo National Park.

From Samdua village, our route diverts towards west around remote isolated corners of Dolpo within Kanjiruwa Himal range. Following and re-crossing the same stream of Phu Khola, as climb begins heading higher from the river valley to a small farm and cattle herder’s village of Daja for overnight camping.

Adventure leads towards our main highlight, as route follows on leaving the last human settlement for complete mountain wilderness. An uphill walk on leaving the last green vegetation and tall tree lines then reaching a scenic spot at Chhowamb Tal, a small glacial lake well hidden enclosed by high snow peaks.
Overnight camp is set close to the lake, with time to explore the hidden corners of Dolpo.

From this beautiful location, adventure heads further west in between high mountains of Kagmara and Kanjiruwa Himal, as climb progress heading higher terrain then reaching on the foot of Shey Shikhar peak. Where our base camp is established for some days around dramatic landscape location.

A free day at base for acclimatization as well for preparation for the big climb, with time explore around isolated area, where very few adventurers hardly dare to venture.

Spending two more days to ferry and transporting camping equipment and foods to higher camps, as well checking the route of climb. Although a peak of little above 6,000 m, but leads to technical difficulty reaching the top. Where enough days required for practice climb, and finding accessible and safe route for the final ascent.

After transporting and shifting some of the gear required for the climb, leaving the base camp, as climb leads over rocky moraine of ice and snow and crossing few icy streams fed from the glaciers of Shey Shikhar peak. After few hours of steady climb then finding a suitable level ground to set up our High / Advance Camp for the final climb to the summit of Shey Shikhar Peak.

Enjoy another rest day, which is very necessary and important for the climb as the peak is climbed by only few mountaineers in the past few years.
Requires enough time to study the nature of the climb on this well hidden and least summited peak. On this day our guide will make necessary preparation fixing ropes and snow bar around technical sections where required.

Start the climb, as early as possible following the lead guide as route takes you to tough vertical section of 50-60° angle. The climb leads over ice, rocks, and snow slopes to the summit. After a tough struggle reaching on top, feeling tired having rest, then enjoy the glorious panorama of surrounding mountain range.
Feeling great in high spirit, the make a safe descent on same route back to high camp.

After all the hard and tough days and preparations for the climb, where Himalayan weather plays a big role to the adventure. A reserve and contingency day if the weather is unfavorable for the climb. If all goes well according to our itinerary and the day for the climb, this spare days will be used on the way back to Jhupal making some days shorter to enjoy more of Dolpo beautiful areas.

After a long tough ascent to the summit of Shey Shikhar Peak, with overnight at High Camp, clear the camp and then descend to base camp for onward journey.

At base camp cleaning unwanted garbage, leaving nothing except only your footprints. Leaving the area as pristine as it were, on this day preparation for return journey and packing all climbing gear.

From the base camp re-trace the walk to Daja, reaching back within human settlements after many days being in total isolation. Walk on gradual trail with few ups and more down then reaching into greens and tall tree lines at Daja for overnight camp.

Morning starts with gradual descend from Daja and past Lasa to Pungmo following a trail close to a stream all the way, as well crossing several time the same smaller streams facing view of Kanjiruwa Himal. As walk leads to a sparsely forested trail. The Himalayan blue sheep and wild fox can be spotted en route sometimes along with many bird species. A sharp downfall from Khyaru leads to the village of Pungmo for overnight camp.
A nice village with two Gompa / monasteries where both 'Bon' and 'traditional' Buddhism are practiced, a place with large monument called Chorten.
For interested people can hike to Gompa, walk on a wooden bridge below from the village. As trail follow a pine forest across a cliff to the Gompa. After spending some time around the Gompa, back down to Pungmo with rest of the afternoon at leisure till dinner time.

From here to our next main destination, walking to Ringmo close to attractive Phoksundo Lake. Route leads on the left side of a river, as climb starts for an hour to a Nepal Army camp, near Pungmo and Phoksundo Rivers.
The walk up to Ringmo is pleasant as enormous rock walls guards the upper valley, as out day ends on reaching Ringmo village for overnight stop near by the beautiful Phoksundo Lake. Enjoy views of enormous waterfall that flows from Phoksundo River.

Enjoy the rest full day after a tough hard trek, as well for acclimatization around the scenice Phoksundo Lake. On this day take a short hike and explore the beautiful surroundings, walk up to a hill from Ringmo and walk around serene turquoise colored Phoksundo Lake. The areas around surrounded by rocky hills and with reflection of Kanjirowa Himal 6, 612 m. Rest of the day explore the village of Ringmo and the Buddhist Monastery. Walk around, and observe the local culture of local culture and custom, how they dress with simple clothing that is dyed a maroon tint and wears Tibetan-style somba / dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for footwear. Both men and women often wear religious charms and cords of coral, amber, and turquoise.

After an enjoyable and interesting time at Ringmo village and Phoksundo Lake, today’s walk leads to other side of Dolpo area heading east by an alternative way crossing few passes of Baga-la and Numa-la. Morning walk leads past Muduwa village and the stream of Muduwa on a valley gorge to reach a small grazing area at Temche for overnight stop near Ghuchun Khola (stream).

Start the morning walk on gradual trail and then climb to cross over Baga-la at 5,169 meters high, with steep climb for more than three hours. On reaching on top of the pass, rewards with glorious panorama of Phoksundo Lake with Kagmara peaks. After reaching the second pass of the trek and with fascinating views a long descend to overnight camp at Danigar or Phedi, means bottom of a hill.

Morning walk continues to cross the last pass of the adventure over Numa-La South Ridge and a pass at 5,309 m high. This will be the highest spot of the adventure, climb over grassy slopes for near to three hours to reach on top of Numa-La. Enjoy grand views of Dhaulagiri mountain range and Kagmara peak with beautiful valleys down bellows includes scenery of dramatic surrounding landscapes. After an enjoyable moment descend to the base of the pass, then walk for few hours on gradual path to overnight camp on a summer pasture fields at the base or Phedi.

From here onward on the way back to Dunai and Jhupal, from the base of Numa-La, morning starts with steep climb to a small ridge offers views of Mt. Dhaulagiri range, and then descend to Modo valley, time permitting visit the monastery, here the trail from Upper and Lower Dolpo joins.
After Modo and Khanger few hours of good walk to Tokyu-Gaon for overnight, this is one of the most impressive and interesting village of Dolpa area, consist of more than ten villages and nice tended farm fields with old impressive monasteries.

After an exciting and pleasant overnight stop at Tokyu Gaon, morning walk downhill to Tarap Chu on a wide green valley, a scenic and longest valley around Dolpo area stretches about 20 km. As walk continues coming across Yak man temporary settlements, then finally ending the day on reaching at Dho Tarap for overnight stop. An interesting village inhabited by mixed people of Tibetan origin and Magar hill tribe of western Nepal.

From Dho Tarap, morning starts with long descend to Tarap valley, follows a river Tarap Chu most of the way till it joins Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village.
Walk past Langa a place with beautiful cascading waterfalls, then head due south on the trail to Sisaul and Kesila a small area of Yak herder temporary camps then to our overnight camp at Ghyamgar.

Today walks takes you on Tarap valley, as route enters a narrow gorge with some juniper and wild rose bushes, walk continues past Tol-Tol a place with a large overhanging cave. Around the area might spot some wild life like Naur or Blue Sheep and other animals.
As walk progress to the confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river after a long day walk of about six hours.

Start the morning walk past smaller villages and then into a small wooded area, following a river to near Tarakot, a large and interesting village with an old history and well maintained terraced farm fields. Tarakot with old fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village. The village houses famous old Sandul Gomba located on the junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River where our overnight camp is pitched.

After a wonderful time at Tarakot, last day journey leads to Dunai after walking for few hours then taking a drive to Dunai. The Headquarter town of Dolpo district after a refreshing stop drive continues following many spread out villages to Jhupal for last overnight stop. From here next morning flight take you to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

Morning walk to Jhupal small airport and then board in a small aircraft for short scenic flight to Nepalgunj facing views of Western Himalaya range of peaks.
At Nepalgunj for refreshing stop, and then board on connecting flight to Kathmandu. Where our great adventure concludes after a memorable adventure of wonderful experience around Nepal Far West Himalaya from Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trekking.
Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities and shopping souvenirs or join in for short tour around places of great interest.

A free day as contingency, in case of unfavorable bad weather that might lead to delay or cancellation of flight at Jhupal. As Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes even in best time of the year. If all goes well as per our standard itinerary, one can relax or join or join in for another tour around Kathmandu-Patan or Bhaktapur or enjoy individual activities.

Last day in Nepal as per your international flight time, our staff and guide transfer you to the airport for homeward bound. After a great time and adventure on Shey Shikhar Peak Trek & Climb around Far West Nepal on Dolpo area.

All camping equipment and food will be carried by Brown Bear Trails throughout
the trek and climb of Shey Shikhar Peak. Includes foods for the trek and climb,
having separate kitchen department of cook, kitchen staff along with guide,
camping / trekking staff and porters to carry all the camping gear.

04: What happens if someone gets very sick in between the trek and climb?

Depending upon the seriousness of the patient, for minor wounds and sickness,
having self-treatment with the medicines carried by the clients and from Brown
Bear Trail. For critical conditions, the victim should be brought and evacuated to
a safe lower place to the nearest medical post or hospital by the fastest means of
transportation. Some situation requires Helicopter service the fastest means to
bring the sick to Kathmandu for further treatment.

On leaving large and main villages from Ringmo, electricity power are not
available in the pure mountain wilderness.
After the climb and crossing Baga-La and Numa-La pass then head towards
the larger villages of Dho Tarap where electricity from solar or private small hydropower is available. Where trekkers can charge their electronic items on reaching
the main villages onwards till to the end of the trek at Dunai and Jhupal.

06: Which is the best time for this wonderful adventure?

The best time and season are spring and autumn / fall. Spring starts from March
to May. The spring will be lively and bright with clear fine days most of the time
with longer sunlight hours. Where hills will be alive with wildflowers in full bloom
especially the rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal. Could get snow-fall
sometimes and light rain around lower areas.
The next time is autumn/fall from September to November, most days are
crystal clear for views and walks. But days are short due to the sunlight hours of
autumn and pre-winter times. Can expect snowfall around a high altitudes above
2,500 m high, extra cold with wind-chill factor.
