Overview
Mt. Kailash Journey via Lhasa, one of the best tours and adventures on top of the world within the Tibetan plateau. From Shigatse on the road to Mt. Kailash and holy Manasarover Lake, heading due south-west within arid and barren terrain. Reaching the town of Saga, located on route Nepal border and by the side of Brahmaputra River or the Yarlung Tsangpo.
The journey to Mt. Kailash continues heading over a few passes and then on vast wide plain facing views of snow-capped peaks. Then reaching the western side of sacred Lake Manasarover at Chu-Gompa, the main spot of the holy lake.
A free day at Lake Manasarover for acclimatization as well for walks near the bank of the lake. A huge lake covering also called Tsho Mapham or Tsho Ma-Dros-Pa in Tibet, one of the high altitude freshwater lakes. Which is fed by the glaciers of holy Mt. Kailash, located within Burang County of Ngari Prefecture at 4,590 m.
The lake stretches to 88 km / 55 miles, for a circuit of the lake takes 3 to 4 days hikes. Options for a drive about 4 hours, at Manasarover on a free day with time to marvel at the views of Mt. Kailash. As well as overlooking massive peaks of Gurla-Mandatta at above 7,000 m high south of Kailash and Manasarover Lake.
After a pleasant time at Lake Manasarover, our main journey takes you near Darchen town, the hub of Mt. Kailash. Where drive leads west at Tarboche the starting point of our hike and Parikrama or Kora and circuit.
Mt. Kailash, regarded as a holy mountain at 6, 638 m and 2, 1778 feet high, is a sacred spot. For Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Bon the ancient pre-Buddhist sects, the Hindu believe as the abode of Lord Shiva.
For Buddhism, a peak is a place of Khang-Rimpoche the great master, the Jain believes as the center of the universe.
Start the walk facing views of Mt. Kailash West Face, to reach Dhirapuk and then a long strenuous climb. Then reaching the highest spot at sacred Dolma-La Pass, with marvelous North Face views of Mt. Kailash.
The top festooned with thousands of prayer flags and religious items, from the pass a long descends past Gauri-Kund. A small icy pond, as walk heads downhill to Lamchu valley, then reaching Zutulphuk a place with few lodges, shops.
Zutulphuk, located on the eastern side of Mt. Kailash, the word ‘Zuthul’ means cave where poet and saint Milarepa meditated. One can witness Millerepa’s footprints on the roof inside the cave, from Zutulphuk an easy walk to a road-head. Completing the whole circuit, Parikrama or Kora, and then an exciting drive to Saga town, and towards Kyirong. The end of Tibet journey on reaching the border town at Kyirong, crossing the frontier to Rasuwagadhi in Nepal side.

Best seasons for Mt. Kailash Journey via Lhasa:
The best time for Mt. Kailash Journey via Lhasa is from the late spring to autumn seasons, late spring April and May, and autumn/fall begins from September to October months.
April & May are fine and clear days most of the time, with longer sunlight hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes. Autumn / fall is another best time for tour and adventure around Tibet with a fine clear day. But days are short with sunlight hours can be freezing cold, especially in the morning, and night times will be clear with bright starry nights. Chances of snowfall around higher areas.
For interested people can visit Tibet and Mt. Kailash Journey during summer times of June to August also. As Tibetan plateau falls within a rain shadow, where monsoon dark rain clouds are blocked by the southern great Himalaya range.
That is why Tibetan landscapes are dry with less rain and not enough moisture.
Religion and Culture:
Tibet with a population of near 6 million, includes 7.5 million Chinese settlers, the estimated population within the TAR (Tibet Autonomous Region) or Xizang Autonomous Region. 93% are Tibetans and 6 % are Han Chinese, whilst the rest live in the Tibetan areas outside the TAR.
Dominated by 91% with Tibetan Buddhism, while a minority of 12.5% of the total population is bound to the native Bon or folk religions.
Few Muslims have migrated earlier for trade from the famous Silk Routes.
Tibet famous people from all parts of the country with various ethnic tribes of Tibet, like Kham, Amdo, and Drokpa the nomads. Tibetans from all parts of Tibet follow strong Buddhism religion and culture of ancient Buddhism heritage with many monasteries of great religious significance.
