Overview
Mt. Cho Oyu Mountaineering Expedition takes you to the top of the world’s 6th highest peak, at 8,201 m / 26,906 feet. The mountain was first ascent by an Austrian Expedition with the support of a Nepalese Sherpa guide on October 19th, 1954.
Scaled the peak from across the border in Tibet / China, which is the common and most popular route. Due to easy accessibility and straightforward climb, then from the Nepal side of Gokyo valley.
The mountaineers find it very technical and dangerous to frequent avalanches, from Khumbu the southern sides of Mt. Cho-Oyu.
From Tibet, it is relatively safe, and with the stable weather condition, from Nepal, it is the right opposite. The climbers have to face vertical and steep ledges and are prone to avalanches, as well as unpredictable weather.
Mt. Cho Oyu is a name in the Tibetan language that means “Turquoise Goddess”. Located on the border of Nepal and Tibet at the Western edge of the mountainous Khumbu region. A mere distance of 20 km / 13 miles west from
Mt. Everest. The Northern side of Mt. Cho-Oyu is regarded as the easiest of the 8,000 m peaks. As well it is often taken as a stepping stone to further 8,000 meters peak conquests.
Whereas, the Nepalese south side of Mt. Cho Oyu at the end of Gokyo Valley is considered technically challenging. Including the risk of avalanches, the first-ever recorded ascent via the Nepal side was achieved in the fall of 1978.
Which was conquered by the two Austrians Eduard Koblmüller and Alois Furtner along with a Nepalese Sherpa guide. Who climbed the Southeast Face, from then on, this tough route has never been repeated. But the last successful ascent of Mt. Cho Oyu from Nepal was made in the spring of 2009. The two Kazakhs Denis Urubko and Boris Dedeshko, who has opened a new route by the South side.
This new challenging route from the Southern Nepal side has brightened up the hopes of worldwide mountaineers. Brown Bear Trail offers the climb of Mt. Cho-Oyu Mountaineering Expedition from the South Face of the mountain.
Although the success rate is quite low than to Tibet’s North Side, it offers the mountaineers a new challenge. Taking the toughest South routes will add another adrenaline adventure in the history of mountaineering.
