Overview

Khair Lake Trekking, located on high ridges of Western Himalaya between the world’s 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri and 10th high Annapurna. An exploration in the perfect wilderness around remote pockets of towering Annapurna range of peaks, on less ventured areas. Few groups of trekkers seldom visit this wild country, which takes you into complete isolation away from main routes and villages.

 

Khair Lake Trekking, slowly gaining popularity among trekkers due to its remote and pristine surroundings. Where walk leads in the close shade of high snow peaks and towards the holy glacial Khair Lake. Tucked in a far corner beneath towering peaks of Vara Shikar / Annapurna Fang and Annapurna South.

 

The adventure starts from scenic Pokhara city, situated on a verdant valley surrounded by rolling hills and snow peaks of Annapurna. The charm of Pokhara is the reflection of the massive Annapurna Himalaya on its beautiful Begnas and Phewa Lakes. From Pokhara taking an exciting drive to the high hills dotted with farm villages of Ulleri to begin the trek.

 

Ending the driving journey at Ulleri, the walk starts heading on gradual uphill through the cool shade of the beautiful coniferous forest. A slow climb leads on top of a high hill at Ghorepani amidst rhododendron woodland, with views of Dhaulagiri peaks.

 

At Ghorepani, an early morning hike to famous Poon Hill at 3,210 m, offers stunning sunrise over an array of Snow Mountains. A glorious morning facing the world’s three highest peaks of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Annapurna range with majestic Machhapuchare the Fish-Tail peak.

After an exciting panorama of Himalayan peaks, with striking sunrise views walk continues towards our main destination to Khair Lake.

The adventure leads away from the main busy and popular trails, heading north past the nice and last Sauta village. As the trek progresses with a climb into the cool shade of the forest and then reaching Khopra Ridge above Ghorepani and farm villages.

 

Khopra Ridge is the highest overnight stop of the trek at 3,865 m, a scenic ridge between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himalaya. From Khopra Ridge, early morning day hike to our main highlight at Khair Lake, the highest spot of the trek.

Khair is a glacial and holy lake fed from the glaciers of Annapurna South and Vara Shikar or Annapurna Fang. Once a year a religious event takes place on an auspicious time of full moon in August. Thousands of local devotees visit for pilgrimage to take a bath and dip in the holy lake. Belief is that it relinquishes the sins of a hundred lifetimes, a pray and worship is held.

 

After an interesting time at the holy Lake of Khair, and then back to Khopra for return journey to Pokhara. Taking an alternative route walking on an isolated forested path to Dobato, and then reaching on the main trail to Tadapani.

 

Following down back into the green forest, where beautiful scenery of snow peaks follows you at Ghandruk village. Stopping for the last overnight halt around mountain village before ending the trek at scenic Pokhara city.

Finally, the adventure completes on reaching Kathmandu, after a marvelous time and great experience on Khair Lake Trek.

Day 01:          Arrival in Kathmandu 1,345 m and transfer to respective Hotels

Day 02:          Kathmandu with sightseeing tour, trek briefing and preparations.

Day 03:          Drive or fly to Pokhara 860 m, transfer to hotel-06 hours on drives.
Day 04:          Drive to Ulleri 1,700 m and walk to Bhanthati 2,300 m – 05 hrs.

Day 05:          Trek to Ghorepani 2,880 m – 03 hrs. Transfer to nice lodge.
Day 06:          Hike to Poon Hill 3,210 m and trek to Sauta village 2,640 m – 05 hrs.
Day 07:          Trek to Khopra Ridge 3,865 m – 06 hrs.

Best seasons for Khair Lake Trekking:

The best time for this wonderful adventure is from the mid-spring and autumn seasons, mid-spring from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

 

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wild flowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

 

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are short with sun-light hours can be freezing cold higher altitude, especially in the morning, and night times will be clear with bright starry nights. Chances of snow on tracks above 2,100 m higher.

 

Religion and Culture:

The high hills of Annapurna Himalaya and Mid-Hills are populated by Gurung and Magar Poon people the mountain tribes of Nepal and the highlanders of Annapurna Himalayas. The Gurung follows the Buddhism religion as well with their ancient culture of the Bon sect, pre-Buddhism. While the Magar Poon is interwoven with both Hindu and Buddhism religions. On the trek, you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments.

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, received by our guides and staff for short transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city.

Khair Lake Trekking. Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, dos and don’ts, local culture, as well foods provided and of lodges on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

After an exciting day tour back to hotel for Trek preparation with last minute briefing from your leader and guide.

Depart from the hotel, after early breakfast transfer for interesting drive for beautiful Pokhara city. An exciting drive leads beyond Kathmandu valley towards low warm country facing views of high snow peaks. Journey leads through farm villages and towns, as drive continues reaching at scenic Pokhara by its serene Phewa Lake. Where all good hotels and restaurants with many shops and stores located, on arrival check into a nice hotels.

Morning after a nice breakfast at the hotel, a scenic and interesting overland journey leads past Pokhara city, facing grand views of Annapurna Himalayas.
Drive takes you through farm fields, villages then reaching at Nayapul town where route diverts from the main highway. From here onwards on rough hilly tracks past lovely Bhirethati village, as drive leads to Hille and Tirkhedhunga with beautiful waterfalls. As drive leads on winding up to Ulleri, a large village populated by Magar hill tribe. From Ulleri a short walk on gentle up to a small settlement of Bhanthati for overnight in one of its best lodge.

Enjoy the morning views of Annapurna South and majestic Machhapuchare Himal, the famous Fish-Tail peak. Soon after breakfast, walk lead on nice forested path with slow climb to Ghorepani, a village tucked on a high ridge beneath scenic Poon Hill. Ghorepani with many nice lodges for lunch and overnight stops facing views of Dhaulagiri Mountain range, located amidst beautiful rhododendron forest.

Early morning before breakfast, hike up to Poon Hill for stunning sunrise view over array of Himalayan peaks. The hill with high view tower, enjoy super panorama of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiris with Annapurna range with towering Machhapuchare Himal and Manaslu as far towards Ganesh Himal in the far eastern horizon. After a glorious morning at Poon Hill, downhill to Ghorepani for breakfast, and then walk begins downhill to Chitre village.

From Chitre, which is on the main trail, our route diverts heading down and up towards a nice farm village of Sauta for overnight stop, facing grand views of Dhaulagiri Himalaya range.

Enjoy the morning views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalaya, having breakfast walk starts on leaving the last permanent settlement and village for some days, as trail leads to climb through beautiful forest and smaller meadows and grazing areas. Reaching an isolated small settlement of Chistibung, a place of few small shops and huts serves as lodge or tea-house. Possible lunch stop, afternoon walk lead to long climb on leaving tree lines and dense forest for mountain wilderness.
Starts with slow uphill and then gets steeper for short while, finally reaching our overnight destination at Khopra Ridge. A small settlement with several simple guest-house and lodges but comfortable with large cozy dining.
Khopra located on a high ridge, close in between of giant Dhaulagiri and Vara Shikar / Annapurna Fang and Annapurna South peaks. At Khopra Ridge for two overnight stops, where next morning walk takes you to our final destination at
Khair lake.

Rising early morning for breakfast to start our long day hike to Khair Lake as well carrying pack lunch. Morning hike leads following a ridge line close to Annapurna South, and then head north east with few refreshing stop to admire surrounding beautiful panorama of snow peaks. After a short rest a short steep climb and then down towards Khair Lake, a place within serene and tranquil surrounding.
Enclosed within high peaks of Annapurna Himalaya, and close to the shore of holy Khair Lake, with a small Hindu temple and shrine of Lord Shiva.
Where once a year annual religious festival held, auspicious time of Jani Purnima in Full Moon time of August as per Hindu Lunar calendar.

Enjoy the tranquil location within close snow mountain backdrop, after a lovely moment, head back for last overnight stop on the high ridges of Khopra Ridge.

From Khopra Ridge on completing our great adventure visiting our main highlights Poon Hill and Khair Lake. Morning walk leads down near Chistibung, and then climb towards Bhainse Kharka, a summer pasture of local cattle herders.
As walk continues through lovely rhododendron and pine forest then reaching a nice meadow and a clearing with few huts serving as simple lodge and tea-house at Dobato. A great place for overnight amidst forest surroundings with super view of Annapurna series of peaks with majestic Machhapuchare Himal at close distance towards north.

Morning enjoy the panorama of Annapurna Himalaya range, and then walk leads through lovely woodland on leaving the off the beaten trail. As route finally joins at Tadapani a small settlement amidst beautiful forest surroundings with number of good lodges. Enjoy the close views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchare Himal as far towards Annapurna-II. Overnights in one of its best lodges facing exciting views of snow-capped peaks.

Tadapani offers grand sunrise views right from the lodge, having good breakfast today a short morning walk till lunch at Ghandruk village.
From Tadapani, a nice pleasant walk through beautiful forest to another Bhainse Kharka, a small place with few lodges and shops.
From Bhainse Kharka, steep descend to a stream, and then on winding gradual down to Ghandruk a large village, populated by Gurung the main tribes of Annapurna Himalaya, follows Buddhist religion as well worship Bon sect of pre-Buddhism. Lunch and overnight stop at Ghandruk in one of its many best lodges facing view of Annapurna peaks. Afternoon free to explore around the village and visit the Gurung village and the small museum of great cultural interest.

Today last day of the wonderful adventure, morning a short walk downhill to a village of Kimche, as walk follows further down to Syali Bazaar a farm village, and then end the trek taking an enjoyable drive past Bhirethati and Nayapul, then on main highway where pleasant drive reaches Pokhara city, and back to the hotel.
Rest of the afternoon free at leisure for individual activities and short tour of Pokhara visiting its natural wonders.

Morning an exciting from Pokhara, on reaching Kathmandu transfer back to your hotels with afternoon free at leisure for shopping souvenirs and handicrafts.

03: When is the best time for this treks to Khair Lake? 

The best time for Khair Lake and Khopra Ridge Trek is spring from March to
May and autumn/fall begin from September to early November. These are the
best times for pleasant walks and views but could get snow-fall sometimes. Much
colder morning and evening, night time, but with clear sunny most of the days.  

04: What do we expect on these treks?

Accommodation in local lodges is simple but nice, clean and cozy but smaller
rooms. But Khopra and Dobato are very basic rooms but nice and clean.

Every village has hydroelectricity power, and some smaller settlements like Sauta,
Chistibung, Khopra and Dobato has solar power. Where trekkers can change their
electronic items paying a fee per hour per item charged to the lodge owner. 
Yes, nearly all villages provide hot or cold showers and bathe with hot water in a
large bucket. Extra charge for using hot shower and bathing, can get the facilities of
hydro or solar power around Ghorepani, Tadapani and Ghandruk villages.

08: Do we get internet services and Wi-Fi on these treks?  

Only in main villages like Ghorepani and Ghandruk villages. As well at Sauta and
Khopra Ridge, but sometimes due to landscapes wise entering deep valleys and
gorges where internet services could be obstructed.
After leaving Dobato and Tadapani settlements, one can enjoy the services of
Internet and Wi-Fi at Ghandruk onto Pokhara city. 

09: When do we need to book for these treks? 

Booking with Brown Bear Trail needs a minimum of one month or earlier the best.
Sending your passport details, and advance payment with the photo copy of Travel /
Medical Insurance. The rest of the trip balance is to be paid on arrival in Kathmandu
before trek departures.
