Kathmandu Valley Rim Trek

5 Days

Overview

The Kathmandu Valley Rim Trek is a beautiful trip around the obscure peripheries of the capital. Kathmandu, as you know, is a valley bowl surrounded by lush green hills. The farther away from the city you go, the rural the area gets. The sprawling cacophony of city sounds is serenely replaced by the tranquil lullabies of wispy waterfalls and singing birds. And the Kathmandu Valley Rim Trek is perfect if you want to experience the brilliant contrast of Kathmandu’s city and its rim.

Starting with a drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, the trek presents you with a chance to take in the changing landscape as you leave the city behind. Instead of concrete jungles, the trek offers you amazing hillocks covered with alpine trees and forests, with coruscating rivers that flow across the valley floor with swift and clear waters.

The trekking journey also takes you to a popular stop for city trekkers- Chisapani. Situated north of the city, Chisapani is a gorgeous hill station that offers stunning panoramic sights of Kathmandu. Not only that, but the views of mountain peaks in the distance as they loom on the horizon over the crescent troughs of the valley hills are also an unforgettable sight! The trip also takes you to the Shivapuri National Park, a bird-lovers paradise. Likewise, the journey also includes a stop at Nagarkot, one of the most popular hill stations in the whole of Kathmandu valley. Stare out into the panorama of the gaping valley as the sunrises from amidst the Himalayas! The experience is nothing like anything else in the world.

The trip is most suitable for people who are looking for a leisurely trek near the city. It is a brilliant short trip that lets you enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the valley and Snowy Mountains in a small amount of time. It does not require a strenuous trek preparation beforehand either, and the proximity to the city makes it have some perks over treks through rural villages across the country. You can also take in the authentic cultural and traditional environment of the ethnic people in the city’s foothills.

Itinerary

You may arrive at Kathmandu at any time. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by one of our airport representatives. He will escort you to your Hotel. There are no planned activities for the day, so you may check into the Hotel and relax. Overnights stay at the Hotel.

You will begin with a drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, situated about 17 kilometers away from the city. The ride can get a little bumpy and dusty as you drive upon the unpaved roads as you cross Boudha. The road ends, and the trail starts as you reach Naya Pati Bus Stop. From there, you will continue to Sundarijal, gradually climbing uphill and passing by small houses and huts occupied by village people. Ahead, the terrain is dotted with big boulders with small thin waterfalls splitting the image of the rocks into two. Finally, you will reach the Sundarijal reservoir to purchase your permits for the National Park. From there, the trekking trail meanders through thatch-roof huts of the Tamang and Newar people towards Mulkharka. You can take a rest here and recuperate for a while. From there, the trail transitions into a single narrow track covered by dense forest canopies. This section of the trail is quite peaceful, and it will lead you to Burlang Bhanjyang, from where you can enjoy amazing views of peaks like the Langtang Himal, the Dorje Lakpa, and Mount Gaurishankar, among many others. From Burlang Bhanjyang, it is a steady descent to Chisapani. Overnights stay at Chisapani.

Today's trek starts at Chisapani, from where you will head southeast, following a steep downhill trail. You can encounter a variety of birds and flowers along the trip, making the trip quite beautiful. Walking for about 2.9 kilometers, you will reach Nagamati Dhaap, a small serene lake. From here, the hike becomes quite demanding, with the trail gaining an elevation of about 515 meters. The trail opens out into the lush forests of the National Park as you pass Nagamati Dhaap, with the trail sprucing towards Jhule View Point (2,227m). After leaving Jhule, you will reach a fork in the trail, descending towards Lapsephedi. The Jarsing Pauwa village lies a few miles ahead. From Jarsing Pauwa Bus Stand, you will head south along the single track, enjoying the views of the lush green terraced field as you finally reach Kartike Bhanjyang. From here, you can see the beautiful hills of Nagarkot rising above the valley like a giant green carpet. Following the trail, you will ascend along a steep path to Nagarkot. Overnights stay at Nagarkot.

Today, you will wake up early in the morning for a gorgeous sunrise view amidst the mountains from the Nagarkot View Tower. The view of the sunrise changing the color of the Himalayas is quite remarkable. After that magnificent sight, you will then begin your tranquil trek towards Dhulikhel, trudging through the valley woodlands and taking in the views of the terraced farms and mustard pastures. The trek also offers distant views of the Himalayas that shadow over the valley in a beautiful cerulean tincture. Passing through various ethnic villages and small settlements, you will finally reach Dhulikhel. The trek there is also filled with the sound of hill birds and small waterfalls that dot the terrain, falling from cliff sides and boulders. Overnights stay at Dhulikhel.

This is the last day of the trek. You will be escorted back to the airport for your departure.
