Best seasons for Gokyo Lake Trekking:

The best time for this beautiful trek is in spring and autumn seasons, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wild-flowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are short with sun-light hours can be freezing cold higher altitude, especially in the morning, and night times will be clear with bright starry nights. Chances of snow on tracks above 3,000 m higher, as well on passes.

Religion and Culture:

The high Khumbu area of Everest region highly populated by Sherpa people the mountain tribes of Nepal and the highlanders of Eastern Himalayas. The Sherpa follows strong Buddhism religion and age-old culture similar to Tibetan, on this trek you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and monuments.

Overview

Gokyo Lake Trekking, one of the most fabulous adventures where a walk leads you to picturesque high country at Gokyo valley. A magnificent location enclosed by snow-clad peaks that reflects on its emerald lakes makes the whole surrounding beautiful and attractive.

Gokyo Lake, situated north of high Khumbu valley around Everest region away from the main busy trail of Everest base camp. In the early days till present a grazing pasture land for Yaks and other domesticated cattle. As the area gained more attraction over the years, settlements with nice simple lodges began to flourish for the trekkers.

The beauty and charm of the adventure, walking on a serene trail from green woods of tall rhododendron and pine trees. As the walk progress entering a wide-open country, facing mind-blowing views of giant mountains all the way to Gokyo Lake. The trail follows uphill coming across the first, second, and third main lakes of Gokyo. Where all good lodges are located above the lake with excellent views of Mt. Cho-Oyu world’s 6th highest peak.

Next early morning few hours climb to Gokyo-Ri, the highest spot of the adventure at 5,357 m / 17, 576 feet. The hard effort of morning climb rewards with a breathtaking panorama of the world’s four highest peaks. From Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu to Mt. Makalu in the east direction with an array of famous well-known peaks.

Gokyo Lake Trekking extends towards a return journey on completing the highlights, heading downhill back to trees and green vegetation.

Walk follows to Phortse village, situated above Dudh Kosi River and from the main path of Gokyo and Namche Bazaar. The journey continues on a quiet trail facing views of majestic Ama Dablam with adjoining peaks, the high route leads to Pangboche.

A nice Sherpa village on route to Everest Base Camp and Namche Bazaar via Tengboche Monastery. Return journey from Gokyo Lake and Pangboche leads down and up into the lovely forest to Tengboche and its impressive monastery.

Tengboche, one of the highlights of this trip a beautiful spot surrounded by an array of peaks with a view of Everest. A close sight of Ama Dablam, Kantega, and Tharmasarku peaks, besides marvelous scenery Tengboche is famous for its majestic monastery. Without a visit to the monastery interior, our adventure will be unfilled, the tour takes you to the main prayer hall. Adorned with masterpiece arts of vivid paintings, includes tall statues of Lord Buddha, famous Saints, and Gurus of Tibetan Buddhism.

After an impressive tour of the monastery, return journey to Lukla where the route leads down to a river. The journey continues with few short ups to famous

Namche Bazaar the hub of Khumbu Sherpa and trekkers. An interesting place where we had a wonderful time with an extra day for acclimatization on route to Gokyo Lake. From Namche downhill to Dudh Kosi River and then on a nice pleasant trail to Lukla for the last overnight stop. The next morning short scenic flight brings you to Kathmandu, after a marvelous adventure and great experience on Gokyo Lake Trekking.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

After an exciting day tour back to hotel for Gokyo Lake Trek preparation with last minute briefing from your leader and guide.

As per flight time for Lukla, normally early morning by 7 a.m or before to reach Kathmandu domestic air-terminal, after checking in board in a small aircraft of maximum 18 seated plane. During 30 minutes flight enjoy grand panorama of Himalayan peak with views of Mt. Everest, as plane land at Lukla Tenzing & Hillary airport. Here with time to get refreshed before starting our first day walk, from Lukla route follows through the town with short downhill. From a small village of Choplung on gradual trail past prayer walls to Ghat village, and then to Phakding for first overnight in the comfort of a nice lodge.
Phakding close to Dudh Kosi River, the source of the river fed from the Ngozumpa glacier around Gokyo valley and the lakes.

Today a pleasant morning walk before Namche Bazaar, route leads with short down and ups to cross a long bridge to Monjo village and at Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha a name for Mt. Everest in Nepal, the Sherpa call as Chomolungma of Tibetan origin language. From the park entrance walk to the last village Jorsalle in between Mono and Namche Bazaar. Having lunch in Jorsalle walk on river bed within forest of tall rhododendron and pine tree lines then cross a long bridge. Where route follows on winding uphill trail with grand views of Kwangde peaks, as walk progress with glimpse of Mt. Everest and Lhotse on a clear fine day. Slowly walk comes to an end on reaching our overnight halt at Namche Bazaar, an affluent rich Sherpa town and an important trading center with a weekly Saturday market, fresh foodstuffs are brought up from lower villages for bartering or to sell.

A free day for acclimatization before heading towards higher destination at Gokyo Lake, at Namche with various ways to enjoy short or long hike. The best is walk up to a hill on top Namche near National Park Headquarter with interesting museum.
From the top offers superb views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and majestic looking Ama Dablam with arrays of peaks. Visit the museum to gather more information of Khumbu and Sherpa, as well of flora and fauna with mountaineering history of the region. After lunch with relaxing afternoon or browse the streets of Namche lined with many shops, stores and restaurants.

From Namche after a pleasant stop for two overnights, adventure continues with short climb to a ridge, then on nice gradual path for short while. Then our route diverts on leaving the Namche and Everest base camp main busy trail with climb to Mong Hill. On top facing glorious panorama of Khumbu snow mountain range, from here a short descend to Phortse Tenga. A small settlement by the Dudh Kosi River gorge covered in woods of rhododendron, firs and pine trees.
Having lunch break, afternoon walk uphill into a gorge within forested area to reach at Dole for overnight stop. Located on an open area with few good lodges and small shops.

Morning after a nice breakfast, a short day walk to Machhermo but due to rise in altitude can take much longer of four hours. Start with short steep climb and then on an open exposed terrain where route leads high above Dudh Kosi River.
Walk through a lovely valley of Luza and then heading closer to Machhermo with grand views of Mt. Cho-Oyu towards north. From the high ridge, descend to a small valley where Machhermo located with some few trees of willow and Populus, the only surviving trees at this high altitude.

At Machhermo transfer into a nice lodge for lunch and overnight halt, afternoon free for short walk and hike around this lovely scenic small settlement.

Spending overnight and lovely afternoon at Machhermo, today another short trek to Gokyo Lake our main destination and highlight of the trip. Starts with short steep up to a ridge, and then on nice pleasant trail to Pangka a small place with few simple lodge at 4,545 m high. From here climb on rocky path towards an ablation valley, as walk continues reaching the first lake, and then second lake of Gokyo valley. As walk continues for short while reaching at Gokyo third lake, considered as the main lakes of Gokyo valley, also called Dudh Pokhari like the river Dudh Kosi, which means milky due to chalk white color fed from nearby Ngozumpa glacier.

Walk up to the lodge located above the Gokyo turquoise colored lake, with excellent views of Mt. Cho Oyo world 06th highest with Gyachung Kang a tall peak at above 7,000 m. The Snow Mountains reflects on the surface of calm lake, which makes a beautiful and attractive picture.

Another day around this scenic spot at Gokyo, early morning set off for steep climb of few hours to the top of Gokyo-Ri. The highest point of the adventure rewards with magnificent panorama of world’s four highest peaks.
Namely Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu and Mt. Makalu with array of high towering peaks, includes grand vista of Gokyo valley and the lakes with Ngozumpa the longest glacier around Nepal Himalaya. Rest of the afternoon enjoy leisure walks around the lake or just relax and marvel the views.

A short day walk to Na or further, enjoy the morning as well for lunch at Gokyo and then head towards east past 2nd and 3rd lakes to reach a small place at Na.
Depending upon the availability of a lodge, either stop here for overnight or walk further to lonely area having few simple lodge for overnight stop.

From this isolated corners of Gokyo area, walk follows downhill to enter back into tall tree lines after few hours of morning walks to Phortse a sleepy and quant village with more ten houses with nice simple lodge for overnight stay.
Afternoon at leisure or walk around the village and observe the local farm activities.

After spending few days on remote corners of Khumbu valley, today’s walks lead to the main trail and around villages of Pangboche and Tengboche.
Morning starts with gradual climb on a rocky ledge cliff wall above the Imjatse River facing views of Tengboche and the monastery. As walk continues reaching upper side of Pangboche with an old monastery, possible lunch stop and then walk downhill to a river.

On crossing a bridge, climb for an hour more through lovely forest to Tengboche and the monastery. A beautiful spot facing super panorama of snow peaks that surrounds this lovely place with view of
Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. At Tengboche after checking into your rooms in a nice lodge, with time for tour of the monastery of great religious and cultural interest.

Today could be a long day walk for some trekkers, but worth it to reach Lukla on time next day after spending nights in Monjo. Morning downhill to Imjatse River at Phungi Tenga, after the bridge a short steep climb to reach at Shanasa village, the exact spot, where our route to Gokyo Lake diverted from the main trail.
Walk on nice winding trail to Namche Bazaar, for possible lunch or refreshing break and then a long descend to Dudh Kosi River, walk to Jorsalle village.
After the bridge a short climb to the entrance and exit gate of national park to Monjo village for overnight stop.

From Monjo a short day walk to Lukla, enjoy the last day trek of the adventure crossing over bridges above Dudh Kosi River, walk into forest towards Phakding village. After a refreshing stop on easy winding trail to Lukla past Ghat and Choplong villages adorned with Buddhist monuments.

As walk get closer to Lukla with last final climb of less than an hour to reach our last overnight stop in Lukla. A town with unique airstrip operates regular flights Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu at Lukla celebrate last night party among trekking members and staff after a most mesmerizing adventure on Gokyo Lake Trekking.

Morning short walk to Tenzing & Hillary Airport, as plane arrives from Kathmandu, and then board in a small aircraft, as plane takes off overlooking last view of Everest and Makalu. On reaching Kathmandu transfer back to your hotels with afternoon free at leisure for shopping souvenirs and handicrafts.

A free day as contingency, in case of unfavorable bad weather that might lead to delay or cancellation of flight. As Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes even in best time of the year. 05: How are the foods, accommodation on this Trek?

Accommodation in local lodges is simple but nice, clean and cozy but smaller rooms on leaving Namche Bazaar at Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo.
But at Lukla and Namche Bazaar, the hotels and lodges are of a high standard with attached bathrooms. Having large warm dining rooms serves a comprehensive food menu from Continental, Chinese, Indian, and Tibetan to Nepal meals. Some lodges also provide fresh bakery items also. The main preferred meal is Nepali Dal Bhat (boiled rice and lentil soup with seasonal vegetables and homemade hot sauce or mild pickle. The large group provides set meals to make it easier as well as to save time and fuel energy.

06: Is there hot showers and electricity to charge our electronic items?

Every village has hydroelectricity and solar, where trekkers can charge their electronic items paying a fee per hour per item charged to the lodge owner.
Yes, nearly all villages provide hot or cold showers and bathe with hot water in a large bucket. Extra charge for using the hot shower and bathe.

07: Do we get internet services and Wi-Fi on these treks?

Nearly all main villages as far towards Gokyo from Lukla and Namche Bazaar as well as Dole and Machhermo. But sometimes due to landscapes wise entering deep valleys and gorges where internet services could be obstructed.
