Overview

Four Passes of High Khumbu & Everest Region, involves extreme high altitude adventure around Himalayan passes from Rolwaling to Everest.

A challenging, demanding adventure, most companies offer three passes of Everest, but we have added more making four high passes. To be quite different and provide exciting feat around the high areas of Khumbu within scenic valleys of Everest.

Four Passes of High Khumbu & Everest Region, where all interested trekkers can join in on this marvelous adventure. Where walk leads you around the best scenic valleys of Everest and the Rolwaling region in the close shadow of Mt. Everest.

The adventure commences with an exciting drive towards Rolwaling close to Gaurishankar Himal, heading a low warm farm area near Tama Kosi River.

On reaching Gongar within Dolakha district, the walk starts heading high green hills to Simi-Gaon within Sherpa country. Where air gets cooler climbing further into a lovely forest of rhododendron and pine trees and then at scenic Rolwaling valley.

 

At Rolwaling Valley reaching the first and last village of Beding, home of Sherpa the highlander of Eastern Himalaya. Spending time at Beding for acclimatization and to explore the local culture of immense interest interwoven to Buddhism religion.

From Beding walk towards the end of the valley rim and into hidden corners enclosed within moraine and glaciers. The walk leads past Tsho Rolpa a glacial lake then reaches the base of Tashi Labtsa-La Pass.

The first and highest pass of our adventure, from here leaving Rolwaling area to reach Khumbu around Everest region. Tashi Labtsa at 5, 755 m / 18, 881 feet, marks a barrier between Khumbu of Everest and the Rolwaling area.

On leaving Rolwaling valley crossing the highest pass of the adventure Tashi Labtsa, enter the Khumbu valley within the Everest region. Then reaching the first village of Khumbu at Thame, a quant settlement where the main flow of trekkers seldom visits. At Thame visit the oldest monastery of the Khumbu area of great religious interest, perched on a high hill. From Thame grand views of Kwangde range with Pachermo peaks, situated close to Tashi Labtsa-La Pass.

 

After crossing the first pass, the adventure continues from Thame village towards the second pass over Renjo-La and to scenic Gokyo valley.

The walk leads to an arid and barren country following an old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet. As the climb continues uphill past Marlung and other smaller settlements of Yak herders reaching remote Lungdhen area. Located close to the junction of Renjo-La and Nangpa-La pass the last border to Tibet joins.

 

Staying overnight at Lungdhen in the comfort of a nice simple lodge, the adventure continues with a steep climb towards Renjo-La. The second high passes of the trek reward a sweeping panorama of the world’s four highest peaks. Facing Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho-Oyu with an array of snow peaks of Khumbu Himal, after an enjoyable moment at Renjo-La. A steep descend to Gokyo valley and around simmering turquoise glacial lakes of Gokyo, situated between Renjo and Cho-La passes.

 

Gokyo Valley for its five lakes, all good lodges located close to the shore of the main 3rd lake. A picturesque valley of Gokyo with grand views of the world’s 6th high Mt. Cho-Oyu, reflecting on the lakes. Gokyo is a popular adventure destination around Khumbu, a climb on top Gokyo-Ri hill offers a panorama of the world’s tallest peaks. Almost similar view as seen from Renjo-La Pass, after a pleasant time at Gokyo, completing 2nd passes. From Gokyo walk leads at the end of a valley, a steep climb reach you on top of Cho-La. The 3rd highest pass of the adventure the top festooned with rock cairns and colorful prayer flags. From the pass enjoy views of Cholatse, Lobuche, and Nirekha peaks as far towards Cho-Oyu. From the top of Cho-La pass, a steep descend to Dzongla a small settlement with some nice simple lodges. Located close to Cholatse and Taboche peaks and on route to Everest base camp and Kongma-La our final last pass.

 

After crossing the third pass, the walk follows on the main trail to Everest base camp through Lobuche and Gorakshep. A side trip to base camp and climb of high Kalapathar hill, besides our main goal crossing four passes.

 

On reaching beneath Mt. Everest facing stupendous views of Khumbu Icefall, glaciers with Nuptse and Lhotse. Enjoy the spectacular scenery of frozen mountainous landscapes, then head back to Lobuche, preparation for the last pass to cross. Before heading to Lobuche adventure leads to the top of a rocky hill of Kalapathar, for the closest views of Mt. Everest.

 

Our final day of the adventure begins early morning from Lobuche, with a climb to a moraine dune and short descend. Walk leads across the Khumbu glacier on a faint path, then start the climb to the last final pass of the adventure.  Finally reaching on top of Kongma-La marked with prayer flags, hidden behind the great wall of Nuptse, Mehara, and Pokalde Peaks.

 

Completing all major high passes and main highlights of the adventure, easy pleasant walk downhill to Lukla. The return journey takes you to a green forested trail with time at scenic Tengboche Monastery and famed Namche Bazaar.

 

Spending an enjoyable moment at Namche Bazaar the hub of Khumbu and Everest area, where walk heads to long descend. Following Dudh Kosi River downstream past lovely Monjo and Phakding villages then reaching at Lukla. The gateway town for various adventures around high Khumbu and Everest region, a busy and popular Sherpa town. Early morning short flight from Lukla brings you to Kathmandu, concluding Four Passes of high Khumbu & Everest Region Trekking.

 

An overwhelming adventure crossing Tashi-Labtsa-La Pass 5, 755 m and

Renjo La 5,240 m, Cho-La pass 5,367 m. The last Kongma-La 5,535 m with a side trip to Kalapathar Hill 5,643 m and Everest base camp at 5,364 m high.

Best seasons for Four Passes of High Khumbu & Everest Region:

The best time for this wonderful adventure is from mid-spring and autumn seasons, mid-spring from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

 

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wild-flowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

 

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are short with sun-light hours can be freezing cold higher altitude, especially in the morning, and night times will be clear with bright starry nights. Chances of snow on tracks above 3,000 m higher, as well on passes.

 

Religion and Culture:

The high Rolwaling & Khumbu area of Everest are highly populated by Sherpa people the mountain tribes of Nepal and the highlanders of Eastern Himalayas. The Sherpa follows strong Buddhism religion and age-old culture similar to Tibetan, on this trek you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and monuments.

 

As you encounter prayer walls and Stupa, where walking clockwise will be the right way to respect the local culture, from the Rolwaling area to Khumbu around the Everest region. On this trek, you will visit the monasteries of Simi-Gaon, Beding village as well in Thame with a more than 500 years old monastery. On walks from Thame to Namche Bazaar unto Lukla coming across many prayer symbols and monuments.

Checking your lovely room, and after a refreshing rest join with other members of

Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, do’s and don’ts, local culture, as well camping, foods and of lodges on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

Rolwaling Valley and Pachermo climb with Tashi Lapcha Pass adventure begins with an exciting drive on Kathmandu-Jiri highway, an interesting journey around Himalayan mid-hills. As drive heads to Charikot and Dolakha towns to reach the base of Rolwaling high hills at Gongar, a small farm village near to Tama Kosi River, flows from the glacial source Mt. Gaurishankar and bordering mountains of Nepal and Tibet. First overnight camp around this small village close the river with time to get refreshed before dinner prepared by our camping cook and staff.

Morning after a good breakfast cross over Tama Kosi River within a narrow gorge to Chetchet with views of beautiful waterfalls, as climb leads to cooler hills on leaving low warm area with rice paddy fields.
After an hour climb to reach at alpine hills for overnight camp at Simi-Gaon village populated with Sherpa tribes, a nice farm village with farm terraces growing corns, potatoes, wheat’s, barley and millets, afternoon at leisure visit an old monastery facing views of Mt. Gaurishankar and Melung-Tse peak.

Adventure continues towards North East as walk leads past farm terraces and into lovely forest of rhododendron, oaks, magnolia, and pine trees. Continue walk with climb to a hill top and then descend past grazing areas of local herders with small temporary built up shades and huts at a small place Gyalche.
From this peaceful area within forest, an hour walk to overnight camp at Dovan, located by the river flows from the glacier of high Jugal mountain range.
Overnight camp at Dovan a small settlement in the amidst forest surroundings a place with few houses.

Start the morning crossing Rolwaling Khola (stream) then climb into a forested area, as route winds up to Nyimare and Ramding farm a temporary settlements of cattle herders. Walk continues with climb and then ending lovely day walk on reaching Beding village for overnight camp.
Beding village highly populated by Sherpa as well the last permanent village around Rolwaling Valley, the village placed on a high hill above the river with an old monastery and a primary school built by Hillary Trust and Foundation.

Enjoy a rest day at Beding a perfect place and right altitude for acclimatization before heading towards higher region to cross Tashi Labtsa-La Pass. A short hike and climb to a hill for best views of Jugal Himal with Gaurishankar and Melung Tse, the main close peaks of the area.

From here onward within beautiful Rolwaling valley, a short day walks as trek heads further east facing grand views of Mt. Gaurishankar 7,145 m and Melung Tse peak also called Jobo Garee 7,181 m. After Beding village an up-hill as walk proceeds with more views of snow-capped peaks that follows you to Na-Gaon and with close look of Ramdung-Go 5,925 m, Chukyima-Go 6,259 m and Tabayabyum 5,558 m with Yalung Ri peak at 5,630 m.
Finally morning walk completes by lunch time at Na Gaon, located on a wide glacial Rolwaling valley that ends into a mountain wall.
Na Gaon, a temporary settlement of Beding Yak and cattle herders a grazing pasture fields, where local grows potatoes, wheat’s and barley as they stay during summer during grazing season, afternoon relax and explore around this beautiful area.

After a pleasant stop with pleasant overnight in Na-Gaon, from here into total isolation of mountain wilderness, as walk reach you at the end of Rolwaling Valley. Adventure starts crossing a river to a south bank and then follow small icy stream to Yersa at Sangma, the last temporary shelters of Yak and cattle herders.
On crossing a wooden bridge climb up to moraine, and then traverse steeply up to reach a terminal moraine, close to the dam of Tsho Rolpa glacial lake.
The lake also called Cho / Tsho Pokhari, Tsho a local name of Tibetan origin, overnight camp is set on a sandy level ground south side of Tsho Rolpa around Kabuk area enjoy the afternoon relaxing after tough walk of the day.
From the camp great views of Tsoboje 6,689 m and Dragker-Go peaks 6,793 m with array of snow-mountains that surrounds this remote spot.

From the camp heed slowly to traverse over a rocky moraine above north from the lake, walk along the moraine past overhanging rocks, as our route takes you to a high slopes above a glacier avoiding the lower section.
Climb on rocky glacier to reach overnight camp at the bottom of Drolambau ice-fall. A steady climb takes you to the lowest point of the icefall and then climb at the point to reach over Drolambau glacier.
Taking precaution, danger of rock-falls sometimes during the day, the middle moraine provides a route up to the glacier, overnight camp on suitable level ground surrounded by high mountains within complete wilderness.

A Big Day to Tashi Lapcha-La, start climb early before dawn following a glacier path for an hour or more to reach a spur which provides an access towards our route on the upper glacier. Guides will fix ropes, making ledges so that porters and all members can climb at ease. Although the terrain is not that difficult, a precaution is very necessary, after all is set for the final climb, four hours climb along with mind-blowing surrounding views reach you on top of the pass at highest point of the trek at Tashi Lapcha pass 5,755 m high, festooned with Buddhist prayer flags and rock cairns. From the top of Tashi Lapcha-La, a long downhill to a small Yak herders place at Ngole, walk continues near glacial pond of Pachermo-Tsho, and then head further on gradual path to overnight camp at Tengpo, another Yak herders camp and a summer pasture and grazing areas.

After a long hard time of previous day walks and climb, from here an enjoyable trek most of the way to Namche and beyond to Lukla town. From the first camp around Khumbu area, walk follows over snow slopes the trail is well marked and continues with long descend to reach Thame Khola with excellent views of
Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Makalu and Lumding Himal above the Thame Khola.
A few hours of gradual walk downhill to Thame Village this will be the first hint of trekker and human civilization since Beding village.
At Thame visit old, interesting Monastery located upper end of the village, Thame situated on an Old Salt Trade and Caravan Route of Nepal and Tibet via a high Nangpa-la pass.

From Thame our route leads towards north east within arid and barren windswept country, as walk proceeds to cross Bhote Kosi River that flows downstream from Tibet. A slow gradual climb brings you to a small wind-blown small village at Marlung for overnight stop either in small simple lodge or tented camps.

Morning walk to Lungden on route to Gokyo and Renjo-La pass, as climb starts on steep slope past few temporary shelters of Yak herder camps, facing grand views of Kwangde peak towards south with Pachermo peak in the west.
After a long hours of steady climb brings you at a small settlement in Lungden, a place with few small lodges for overnight stops. Lungden situated close on route to Tibet border and towards Gokyo and Renjo-La Pass.

Start early morning carrying pack lunch, as walk follows uphill on grassy slopes after few hours of good climb reaching near a rocky area with few small icy ponds.
Having short rest, continue last hour climb to the top of Renjo-La.

From the top enjoy breathtaking panorama of mountain range that surrounds you overlooking views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Cho-Oyu with Mt. Makalu.
After a glorious moments enjoying the super views, a steep descend reaches you at the southern bank of Gokyo 3rd lake. Walk continues for short while reaching at Gokyo close to its simmering lake, the main lakes of Gokyo valley, also called Dudh Pokhari like the river Dudh Kosi, which means milky due to chalk white color fed from nearby Ngozumpa glacier. Walk up to the lodge located above the lake, with excellent views of Mt. Cho Oyo world 6th highest with Gyachung Kang a tall peak at above 7,000 m. The Snow Mountains reflects on the surface of calm lake, which makes a beautiful and attractive picture.

Rest day at beautiful Gokyo, option for early morning steep climb of few hours to Gokyo-Ri. Offers magnificent panorama of world’s four highest peaks.
Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu and Mt. Makalu with array of high towering peaks, includes grand vista of Gokyo valley and the lakes with Ngozumpa the longest glacier around Nepal Himalaya.

An easy morning a short walk to Thagnak, after breakfast route leads to the base of Cho-la pass at Thagnak for overnight halt. Walk past Gokyo 2nd and 1st Lakes towards a small settlement at Na. From here another hour of good walk takes you at Thagnak. Rest of the afternoon at leisure and preparation for 3rd high Cho-La Pass.

Start climb, having early breakfast as well carrying pack lunch, climb on rocky path in between boulders of rocks. Uphill continues then reaching on top Cho-La, the top festooned with prayer flags and stone cairn, as a marker which makes it easy to notice top of the pass, especially when it’s snow deep.
A short rest to enjoy surrounding close views of Cholatse, Nirekha and Taboche peaks as well having a small pack lunch.

On leaving Dzongla, morning a short climb to a ridge top, and then walk on nice gradual up, where trail from Pheriche and Dingboche joins. As walk proceeds
to Lobuche for overnight stop. Located on a corner of a wide valley with number of good lodges, facing view of Nuptse and Lobuche peaks.

From Lobuche morning starts on pleasant path within a wide valley, then short climb to reach in the mid-way to interesting metrological station and Everest base camp. For interested people can take a tour of Glass Pyramid which is a metrological station, a joint venture of Italian and Nepalese scientists, here to record weather and movement of ice and glaciers.

After an interesting visit continue walk above moraine and ice with view of Khumbu glacier below from the trail, a short descend to wide open field of Gorakshep, a place with few lodges. Gorakshep at one time an original Everest base camp. From here with short rest adventure lead towards highlight as route menders over moraine and rocks to Everest base camp and close within massive Khumbu Ice Falls and glaciers.
Enjoy wonderful time at Everest base camp, then return back to Gorakshep for overnight stop in one of its nice lodge.

Early morning options for climb to Kalapathar hill top, offers closest views of
Mt. Pumori and Mt. Everest. A steep climb on one of the highest spot of the adventure at 5,644 m / 18, 517 feet.
After a scenic moment descend to Gorakshep and continue walk back to Lobuche,
rest of the day at leisure and rest, preparation for the last adventure crossing Kongma-La.

Our last 4th high pass of the adventure, start walk early morning from Lobuche after breakfast as well carrying pack lunch for the long day. A short easy walk and then climb a small ridge of moraine, and then down to Khumbu glacier.
Taking slow and careful move on glaciated path of ice and rocks, then reach the other side of the glacier. Where steep climb on loose rocks, then reaching at the base of Kongma-La, after a short refreshing stop. Continue climb on rocky path to the top of Kongma-La, hidden within wall of Nuptse, Mehara / Kongma and Pokalde Peaks. Having rest and descend to the bottom then following a level downing path to Imjatse valley, and then walk to Dingboche for overnight stop.
Dingboche a large settlement with many nice lodges, located western end of Imjatse valley beneath North Face of Ama Dablam and Lhotse, with views of Island Peak towards east of the valley.

A short day walk to Tengboche on return journey to Lukla via Namche Bazaar, after a good breakfast descend to a stream. Crossing a small bridge with short climb, and then on gradual downhill past Somare to Pangboche village.
Having rest with close views of majestic Ama Dablam, continue downhill walk to a bridge and then a climb through lovely forest for an hour or more to Tengboche Monastery. A beautiful spot one of the highlight of Khumbu surrounded by array of snow peaks with view of Everest and majestic Ama Dablam. At Tengboche short tour of the monastery after checking into a nice lodge for overnight stop.

Today a pleasant walk to Namche, an affluent rich Sherpa town and an important trading center with a weekly Saturday market, fresh foodstuffs are brought up from lower villages to barter or sell.
Morning from Tengboche down to Imjatse River, with slow climb to Sanasa village, then on pleasant scenic winding wide trail to Namche Bazaar for overnight stop before Lukla.

From Namche Bazaar enjoy the last day walk of the adventure heading downhill to Dudh Kosi River valley within cool shade of forest, then enter Sagarmatha National Park near Monjo village, then cross over a suspension bridge to reach at Phakding village.

From Phakding on easy trek on winding trail to Lukla past Ghat and Choplong villages adorned with Buddhist monuments. As walk get close to Lukla with last final climb of less than an hour to reach our last overnight stop in Lukla.
Lukla with unique airstrip operates regular flights Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu at Lukla celebrate last night party among trekking members and staff after a most mesmerizing adventure on Four Passes of High Khumbu & Everest Region Trekking.

Morning short walk to Tenzing & Hillary Airport, as plane arrives from Kathmandu, and then board in a small aircraft, as plane takes off overlooking last view of Everest and Makalu. On reaching Kathmandu transfer back to your hotels with afternoon free at leisure for shopping souvenirs and handicrafts.

A free day as contingency, in case of unfavorable bad weather that might lead to delay or cancellation of flight. As Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes even in best time of the year. If all goes well as per our standard itinerary, one can relax or join or join in for another tour around Kathmandu-Patan or Bhaktapur or enjoy individual activities.

Last day in Nepal as per your international flight time, our staff and guide transfer you to the airport for homeward bound. After a memorable adventure on

01: How long is Four Passes of Khumbu & Everest Base Camp Trek?

This wonderful adventure of more than three weeks trek walk and climbing above
5,500 m passes. The trek takes you to cross Renjo-la, Cho-La, and Kongma-La with
Amphu-Labtsa above 5,700 m high passes. As well as visiting Everest Base camp with
a climb on top of Kalapathar at 5,545 m high. At the end flying out from Lukla to
Namecheap and drive back to Kathmandu.

02: When is the best time for this Four High Passes of Khumbu Trek?

The best time is spring from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from
September to early November. These are the best times for pleasant walks and
views but could get snowfall sometimes. Much colder morning and evening,
nighttime, but with clear sunny most of the days.

03: What do we expect on these treks?

Walking ups and down with few flat sections, walk into lovely woods of
rhododendron and pines. The trek leads to several nice villages adorned with
ancient culture and heritage of Buddhism, visiting monasteries of great religious
interest. Encountering friendly and cheerful villagers, cold morning and night time
but with sunny clear days for excellent views of snow-capped peaks.

The trek starts from Lukla at 2,820 m and then reaches above 5,400 m crossing all
four passes the highest pass is Amphu Labtsa above 5,700 m high.

05: How are the foods, accommodation on this 4 passes Trek?

Accommodation in local lodges is simple but nice, clean and cozy but smaller
rooms around Solu region. But at Lukla and Namche Bazaar the hotels and lodges
are of a high standard with attached bathrooms. Having large warm dining rooms
serves a comprehensive food menu from Continental, Chinese, Indian, and Tibetan
to Nepal meals. Some lodges also provide fresh bakery items also. The main
preferred meal is Nepali Dal Bhat (boiled rice and lentil soup with seasonal
vegetables and homemade hot sauce or mild pickle. The large group provides set
meals to make it easier as well as to save time and fuel energy.
But crossing Amphu Labtsa-La overnights in a tented camp with spacious tents for
two people. The food is served by our camping cook and kitchen staff, serving all
set meals with great varieties like in the lodges of Namche Bazaar and other good
lodges.

06: Is there hot showers and electricity to charge our electronic items?

Every village has hydroelectricity and solar, where trekkers can change their
electronic items by paying a fee per hour per item charged to the lodge owner.
Yes, nearly all villages provide hot or cold showers and bathe with hot water in a
large bucket. Extra charge for using the hot shower and bathing.
But for some days crossing Amphu Labtsa, there will be no electricity or hot-
showers till Lukla is reached. Trekkers need to carry a portable solar panel to
charge their electronic items.

07: Do we get internet services and Wi-Fi on these treks?

Nearly all main villages as far as Thame, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar as
well higher than Lobuche and Gorakshep. But sometimes due to landscapes wise
entering deep valleys and gorges where internet services could be obstructed.
But do not expect much while crossing Amphu Labtsa in a total wilderness where
internet services are not available till Lukla town is reached.
