Best seasons for Eastern Nepal Mundum High Trail Trekking & Mera Peak Climb:

The best time for this wonderful adventure is the mid-spring and autumn to pre-winter seasons, spring from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months. Can visit during the pre-winter time also in early December where days clear but cold morning and night time. Springtime from March to May is lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendrons and orchids of various species.

Which you will witness during flowering times around the high hills of Mundum and Salpa Bhanjyang / Pass during March to May.

In the spring season, most days are fine and with longer sun-light hours, but can get an overcast late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude, as well on passes.

Autumn / fall from September to November is another best time for this trek with fine days, clear blue sky for views and walks. But days are shorter due to sun-light hours, temperatures drop to a cold morning, late afternoon, and nighttime around higher elevation, but clear starry nights. Chances of snow on tracks above 2,000 m as well on passes.

Religion and Culture:

Starting from Bhojpur town around eastern mid-hills, the Eastern people are of mixed peoples, mostly Rai of Kirat tribes with few Gurung, Magar, and Tamang with Hindu Chettries and Brahmin.

The low and mid-hills around Bhojpur district practice both Hindu and Buddhism religions and impressive Nepalese culture.

As you enter Solu-Khumbu, southern areas of Mt. Everest from Pangbung village on route to Lukla and Mera Peak, highly populated by highlanders the Sherpa tribe interwoven to Buddhism religion of age-old heritage and colorful culture.

The Eastern Nepal Mundum High route seldom trekked and less visited region, walk-on serene trail away from the mainstream. One of the most enjoyable trekking on high hills following the Mundum ridges towards Solu-Khumbu around Everest via Salpa Pass. Glorious panorama of Eastern Himalaya range includes views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, and Baruntse Himal as far towards Kanchenjunga.

 

As the adventure continues towards high Khumbu, facing grand views of Karyolung, Numbur, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kantega with other famous mountains. A perfect trek for travelers in search of pure wilderness, on least trekked areas walking on pristine surroundings. The adventure begins from Kathmandu taking a short sweeping flight to Bhojpur facing outmost views of Himalayan peaks.

From Central to Eastern Himalaya range, on arrival at Bhojpur town small airport, a short drive on a hilly road. An exciting ride on a local jeep to reach our starting point of trekking at Chekwa Bhanjyang, a farm village. Located on a high hill with a cooler climate at the height of 2,300 m high, from here our adventure starts.

 

The first-day trek begins on a gradual winding path for short while past farm terraces and spread out smaller villages and settlements. Then climb towards a cooler high ridge to reach Dhotre and Maiyum remote farm areas, facing grand scenery of dramatic landscapes. Overlooking rolling green hills and valleys with an array of snow peaks in the north, the adventure continues towards much higher areas. One of the best parts of the adventure walking on the scenic Mundum trail, with a climb to Rawa-Dhap and Lauribina. The highest spots at 3, 426 m before Salpa pass and towards Mera Peak around Hinku valley of Everest region.

 

Finally, adventure heads to another high spot of Salpa pass, for local known as Bhanjyang at 3,349 m. From the top fabulous views of Khumbu peaks within the close surrounding of beautiful rhododendron and pine forest. Salpa pass marks the boundary of Solu-Khumbu and Bhojpur districts, from the top downhill back to farm villages. As route leads through Sonam and Guidel nice and large villages, with a climb to the high ridge of Khiraule. A small pass called Surkhe-La then steep descend to reach a river that flows from Mera Peak and surrounding peaks.

 

After the bridge short climb to Pangbung village, populated by the Sherpa community, on entering high Khumbu of Everest region. Pangbung is the last permanent settlement, from here into the complete wilderness for many days till the adventure ends at Lukla town. Slowly climb takes you into the beautiful and hidden valley of Hinku, walking through a lovely forested path to Thaknak.

A small place with few simple huts serves as tea shops and lodge for travelers passing this route.

 

Where trail from Pangbung and Lukla route joins to Mera Peak and beyond, from Thaknak tree lines drops. As you enter a mountainous terrain of moraine, glaciers, and rocky ground to reach Mera Peak base camp. The final and major highlights of the adventure, having enough days for climbing preparation as well for acclimatization. Early morning before dawn, start the climb from High Camp a slow steady uphill walk on snow slope and ridge. Mera Peak, one of the highest trekking peaks of Nepal, is a straightforward climb with less technical effort and difficulties.

The Climbing grade is ‘F’ means “Facial Easy” the grading system comes from French / Swiss Alpine Climbing Classification Systems. However, climbers should be fully equipped with climbing gear ice-axe, crampons, and good climbing boots to tackle the slippery section. Finally reach on top of Mera Peak summit at 6,461 m /21,190 feet high, rewards with a breathtaking panorama. Overlooking whole of Khumbu peaks that surround the top with world highest Everest, Makalu, Cho-Oyu as far towards Mt. Kanchenjunga.

On achieving all our targets and main highlights, return journey to Thaknak, and then back into the green forest. On leaving the last camp Thuli-Kharka around Hinku valley, the last climb of the trek to cross over Zatwar-La Pass.

From the pass enjoy fantastic views of Dudh Kosi valley with a range of peaks, then descend to Chutanga. Located on the base of Naulekh Himal and Zatwar-La Pass amidst a lovely forest of pines and rhododendron. From Chutanga a pleasant walk to Lukla, a large town and gateway to various adventure destinations around the Everest region.

Last overnight stop in the comfort of a nice lodge, a civilization with a great many facilities for trekkers. Next, early morning walk to Lukla Tenzing & Hillary Airport for a smooth scenic flight to Kathmandu. Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

High Ridges Trekking & Mera Peak Climb adventure starts with scenic flight of 45 minutes to land at Bhojpur town airport, during air enjoy fantastic panorama of Himalaya range of with Everest, Makalu as far towards Kanchenjunga.
On arrival, at Bhojpur airport, received by our guide and trekking crews a short walk to the lodge, with time to introduce among your fellow staff of guide, cook, kitchen staff and all team members.
Bhojpur a moderate size town, populated by Rai Kirats and other tribes of eastern Nepal, an interesting place to observe local life and culture. From here taking a four wheel drive, suitable for mountain and hilly rough tracks. An interesting drive through rural farm village to reach Chekwa Bhanjyang village for overnight stop, located on a high ridge, from here onward air gets much cooler.

From Chekwa Bhanjyang, our adventure starts on Mundum High Trail walking past smaller farm villages, and well-tended terraces of various crops growing from wheat, barley to buck-wheat and seasonal vegetables. Trek continues on high ridges of Mundum facing grand scenery of surrounding beautiful landscapes as well of snow peaks. Then slowly trail leads uphill into cool shade of pine and rhododendron forest to reach a high ridge, then descend for overnight in a small farm village. Overnight in tented camps, with all meals cooked and served by our expert camping cook and kitchen staff.

Start the morning from Dhotre on nice scenic path following the Mundum ridges and into nice forested area, from here onward walking into complete wilderness away from farm villages for few days. As walk come across few cattle herder temporary shelter around summer grazing area to Maiyum for overnight camp.
Located on an open grassy field amidst forest surroundings and close to Hans Pokhari, which is an hour walk from the camp.

From this isolated spot starts with short up to reach a small clear pond called Hans Pokhari, where trail from Pakhuwa Bhanjyang joins which is an alternative route from Bhojpur town. The name Hans Pokhari means a place for migratory ducks that often makes a temporary habilitation. From here after refreshing stop climb to a steep hill for some hours to Satdobato at 3,122 m high, means a junction of seven path, and then a short walk to Hykule for overnight stop on a nice grassy meadow.

After a pleasant overnight stop at Hykule, in the midst of Mundum high ridges, morning walk from here leads near towards Salpa Pass or Bhanjyang as called by all Nepalese. Walk on high ridges into beautiful shade of rhododendron and pine forest past several temporary shelters of cattle herder camp to Rawa-Dhap.
One of the highest spot for overnight camping after walking past a small hill of Lauribina with ups and down to reach a lovely place at Rawa-Dhap.

Morning walk leads uphill most of the way into bamboo and rhododendron forest, on leaving the very end of Mundum ridge as climb lead above within cool area close to Salpa Pass. Climb continues into forested areas past cattle herder temporary camp then end the day at Guranse for overnight stop.

After overnight around tranquil surrounding of dense forest, start the morning walk with short climb to the top of Salpa pass at 3,349 m high, the pass is marked with a large Chorten, a Buddhist monument. Enjoy views of Numbur snow peaks and Khumbu Himal. From the pass a short walk take you to glacial pond, and then continue downhill to Sonam village, inhabited mostly by Sherpa tribe.

As walk continues on gradual winding path to a large farm village at Guidel for overnight stop. From here onward entering within the district of Solu-Khumbu the southern area of Everest, this village populated by Rai people of Kirat the mid-hill tribe of eastern Nepal.

From Guidel a large farm village, morning walk to a bridge and climb to reach another large village of Bung as climb continues through rice terraces, exclusively populated by Rai people. On leaving Bung an hour climb to Khiralule for overnight camp looking down towards Guidel and Bung villages.

After a pleasant stop at Khiraule, walk leads with uphill climb away from villages and into cool forested areas of rhododendron, pines, oaks and hemlock then reaching Surkhe-La or Ghai-Kharka pass within small narrow gorge in dense green vegetation. From the top a steep descend to Ghai-Kharka for overnight camp around small farm area, at present few simple huts exists serves as lodge and tea-shops.

Morning after breakfast a short descend to cross Hinku Khola and then steep ascent to Kharte, a small village populated with Sherpa. From here on gradual winding path all the way to a large Sherpa village at Pangbung for overnight an interesting village steeped with Buddhist culture.

From here into pure wilderness away from main village and human settlement, as walk leads towards higher area within dense woodland of tall rhododendron, magnolia, oaks and pine with fir trees to reach at Ningsow area, which is a summer grazing pasture for domestic animals of nearby villages.
Our overnight camp is set, from here on in tented camps till Lukla after Mera Peak climb.

Morning starts with the sound of birds within deep forest surrounding, as walk heads leads towards Inkhu valley where Mera Peak located.
Walk leads uphill crossing few streams within forested area encountering many temporary cattle herder shelters to reach at Chhatra-Khola where the stream flows from the source of Mera Peak and other adjoining peaks as well.

Today walk leads past tree lines to enter into mountainous country to reach inner Inkhu valley where trail from Lukla joins near tat Kothe on route Mera Peak base camp. Walking into tree lines and many pasture area to reach a clear and wide grassy field and Kothe for overnight camp.

From Kothe, a short morning walk downhill facing excellent view of Peak 43 and Kusum Kanguru peaks, reaching at inner and scenic Inkhu valley along with views of Mera Peak South Face to reach into rhododendron and pine forest, as walk leads into forest reaching at Thaknak for overnight stop, a place with few simple huts serving as tea-house for visitors and local porters.

After two weeks of continues walk, a rest day to pull up the muscles and to be physically fit for Mera Peak climb. As well for acclimatization on the lovely place within beautiful surroundings, where one can explore and hike to a hill for best views of nearby peaks including Mera Peak in the north east direction.

After a nice rest day our adventure continues on gradual path with few ups and downs overlooking fabulous scenery of the surrounding hills and dales that fills around Inkhu valley, as walk gets closer towards Charpatti Tal (four sided lake) dammed by ricks and moraine, and then climb for a short period which lead to a descend within a large meadow at Khare our overnight camping site which is also a Mera Peak base camp.

Here having a rest day after a walk of more than a week duration which is important for acclimatization as well to practice climb on glacier, around icy and rocky area, rest of the afternoon relax and preparation for the climb of Mera Peak.

From base camp at Khare, where we have set one more camp to make this climb a great success and approachable, morning walk follows across Mera-La to reach Mera High Camp in complete tranquil environment, afternoon free after having lunch with preparation for next early morning climb on top Mera Peak, while our guides will scout the area for better routes and make the path much safer with necessary arrangement from incidental accidents.

Starting early morning with serious climb and without any technical problem, as route leads to straightforward climb, however one needs to take safety measures equipped with crampons, ice axe, helmets, after a strenuous climb finally reaching on top Mera Peak summit top, facing panorama of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse,
Mt. Makalu and Mt. Cho- Oyu and of Mt. Kanchenjunga towards far east.
After the climb feeling high then descend on same route and trek all the way to base camp at Khare, feeling tired and exhausted but glad on achieving our major goal and highlight of thes marvelous adventure.

An extra day as contingency in case of unfavorable bade weather conditions, if all goes well this spare can be used on route to Lukla, making the walking shorter for enough time to spend in Lukla

From Khare and Mera Peak base camp return journey will be pleasant without problem of altitude gain, although walks leads to few ups and downs and back into green vegetations and tree lines at Kothe within a small cattle herders shelters.

Morning walk continues leading into dense woodland with steep climb on some small hills and continue walk along grassy meadow with gradual walk to reach our last camp of the adventure at Thuli - Kharka.

Today, our last day of trekking as well longest walks to Lukla, route heads west with climb to a high ridge at Naulekh or Kalo Himal and over Zatrwa-Og, then traverse Zatrwa-La, after tough steep climb descend to Chutanga back into forest and then a pleasant walk to Lukla for scenic flight back to Kathmandu, in Lukla enjoy the last dinner with fellow members and staff, celebrate the last night after a great marvelous walk and climb of the adventure.

Morning short walk to Lukla at Tenzing & Hillary airport with short airstrip suitable for STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft. As plane arrives from Kathmandu at Lukla, and then board on a small airplane for 30 minutes scenic flight to Kathmandu. Enjoy grand panorama of Himalayan range on flight till the plane lands at Kathmandu airport. On reaching Kathmandu airport transfer back to your hotels with afternoon free at leisure for shopping souvenirs and handicrafts.

A free day as contingency, in case of unfavorable bad weather that might lead to delay or cancellation of flight. As Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes even in best time of the year. If all goes well as per our standard itinerary, one can relax or join or join in for another tour around Kathmandu-Patan or Bhaktapur or enjoy individual activities.

01: Is Mundum Trail with Mera Peak a new destination in Nepal Himalayas?

Yes, it is one of the fresh and new destinations around Nepal Himalayas.
Only, very few groups of explorers and adventurers have ventured into this new region
of the southern Eastern high hills of Nepal. Where’s from Ghai-Kharka after Salpa
pass, Guidel, and Bung villages, trekkers do visit quite often. But the Mera Peak climb
gained much popularity at present since the last few decades of time.

02: Where is Mundum Trail and which route to follow for Mera Peak climb?

The Mundum Trail, located Mid-Eastern Nepal above Arun Valley in the district of
Bhojpur; which later joins to Solu-Khumbu area of Everest region.
After crossing Salpa-Pass heading down towards Solu areas at Sonam, Guidel and
Bung villages. Then route leads on remote corners north east of Khumbu to Mera
Peak base camp, joining the main trail coming from Lukla at Thuli Kharka or
Thagnak. Return route after the Mera Peak climb on the main high trail to Lukla
crossing over Zatwar-La pass at Naulekh ridge. For the flight to Ramechap and
then to Kathmandu.

03: What types of accommodation and food to expect on this trek and climb?

As this is completely a raw country where very few trekkers and adventurers
seldom use this isolated route. Throughout the trek and climb of Mera Peak will
on tented camping, where all camping equipment will be carried. As well foods
for the trek and climb, includes separate kitchen unit of cook, kitchen staff along
with guide, camping / trekking staff and porters to carry all the camping gear.

04: What happens if someone gets very sick in between the trek and climb?

Depending upon the seriousness of the patient, for minor wounds and sickness,
having self-treatment with the medicines carried by the clients and from Brown
Bear Trail. For critical condition the victim should be brought and evacuated to
safe lower place to the nearest medical post or hospital by fastest means of
transportation. In some situation requires Helicopter service the fastest means to
bring the sick to Kathmandu for further treatment.

05: Is there any facilities to charge our electronic gadgets?

On leaving major and big villages and towns, most of the area of trekking route
will around remote areas. Far from human settlements or villages.
Walking beyond main villages with facilities of electricity where trekkers can
charge their electronic items. But on route around Mundum area till reaching the
main villages of Solu, with no facilities of electricity as well on route to Mera Peak.
Where trekkers needs to carry a portable Solar Panel for charging their electronic
gadgets till Lukla is reached at the end of trek and climb.

06: Which is the best time for this wonderful adventure?

The best time and season are spring and autumn / fall. Spring starts from March
to May. The spring will be lively and bright with clear fine days most of the time
with longer sunlight hours. Where hills will be alive with wildflowers in full bloom
especially the rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal. Could get snow-fall
sometime and light rain around lower areas.
The next time is autumn / fall from September to November, most days are
crystal clear for views and walks. But days are short due to sunlight hours of
autumn and pre-winter times. Can expect snowfall around high altitude above
2,000 m high, extra cold with wind-chill factor.
