Best seasons for Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trek:

The best time for this long and wonderful adventure is in the spring and autumn seasons, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are shorter with sun-light hours, morning, late afternoon, and nighttime temperatures drop to freezing cold around the higher region with the bright starry night sky. Religion and Culture:

Far North West Nepal around Jumla and Dolpo districts populated by Bhotia and Hindu Thakuri, Roka Chettries the mid-hill tribes. Overview

Adventure from Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trekking, one of the longest adventures taking more than three weeks around Far Western Nepal. A great journey crossing three high passes of above 5,000 m high, from one beautiful area to another.

 

Adventure from Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trekking rewards a perfect blend of nature and culture from green forest to the arid landscape. Here witness the villages and monasteries retaining the age-old Bon culture, pre-Buddhism sect worship of nature and mountain spirits. The journey begins on arrival in Kathmandu, and then fly to Nepalgunj, a thriving city of Far West Southern Nepal.

 

Nepalgunj city, located around low warm sub-tropical climate on the Terai belt, the flat land of Nepal. Where another scenic flight lands you at hill town in Jumla, headquarter and administrative center of the Jumla district.

From Jumla our adventure starts heading due east towards Dolpo and at beautiful turquoise colored Phoksundo Lake. An exciting walk after a time at Jumla town and its market square, populated by mixed people. The western hill tribe the Roka, Malla Thakuri Chettries known as Khas, the ancient tribe where the Nepali language originated.

 

The walk leads through spread-out farm villages and into a cool forest of pines, firs, and spruce as the adventure continues. Then reaching lovely areas of Gothi-Chaur and Hurikot after walking ups and down, a nice village with an impressive monastery.

 

As the walk enters the outskirt of Dolpo within the Buddhism area, on reaching the base of high peaks of Kagmara. The next morning, a steep climb of few hours to Kagmara-La Pass at 5,115 m, the first pass of the adventure. From the top enjoy a grand vista of surrounding high peaks, overlooking dramatic landscapes of surrounding high hills and valleys. After Kagmara-La a long descend to the base on entering into inner Dolpo region and at Phoksundo serene lake. On completing the first highlight of the adventure on reaching Phoksundo Lake, with time to explore lovely Ringmo village. Return journey heading further west crossing high Baga-La 5,169 m and Numa-La at 5,309 m highest point of the trek.

 

The adventure continues to inner Dolpo around the beautiful and longest valley of Dho-Tarap, after spending an interesting time in Tokyu village. One of the most charming and largest villages around the Dolpo area, steeped with the ancient heritage of both Buddhism and Bon.

 

After a wonderful time around Tokyu village, walk-on wide green Tarap valley encountering Yak herders summer camps. As the adventure continues at the end of a valley to enter a gorge of Tarap Chu/stream. Then reach another lovely village at Tarakot a historical place with a high fort or Dzong, a historical village.

 

In the early days during Malla kingdom in the mid-centaury, stood as a major village where Trans Himalaya Salt Trade route. Passes through this village of Tarakot the entrance towards Nepal and Tibet border, with enjoyable and interesting time at Tarakot. Slowly our journey comes to an end following a nice trail to Dunai then reach Jhupal for last overnight around Dolpo.

 

Next early morning bidding farewell to all trekking staff, porters board on a small aircraft for the flight to Kathmandu. On reaching Nepalgunj with time for a refreshing stop, then on connecting flight to Kathmandu, where our adventure concludes.

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, received by our guides and staff for short transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city.

Checking your lovely room, and after a refreshing rest join with other members of
Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trekking. Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, do’s and don’ts, local culture, as well camping, foods and of lodges, camping on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

After an exciting day tour back to hotel for next day trek preparation and with last minute briefing from your leader and guide.

As per flight time for Nepalgunj transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for sweeping 50 mins flight to Far South West Nepal at Nepalgunj city, a warm semi-tropical climate area close to Indian border on reaching at Nepalgunj transfer to a nice hotel within the city area, with time for short walk around.

Early breakfast for another short connecting flight to Jumla, on reaching Jumla after 40 minutes on air, received by our trekking staff that has traveled for many days to reach Jumla, the headquarter town of Jumla district.
From Jumla trek starts with short climb walking past nice farm villages to our first overnight camp near a farm village on route to Dolpo at Deva-Gaon inhabited by Hindu Thakuri and Roka Chettries the mid-hill tribes of Far Western Nepal.

After a pleasant overnight with first time in tented camps, with great service of the field staff, cook and kitchen hands. Having a good breakfast then start first day walk ahead from Jumla, as path descend to a bridge, and after few hour on a quiet trail to Garjan-Kot. A slightly longer walk continues past few houses, and walking by the irrigation channel facing views of high green hills dotted with farm villages. Slowly walk ends to camp below a meadow around cattle herder summer temporary settlement to establish our overnight tented camp.

From this lovely camping spot trail descends to the banks a tributary of Tila River, as walk follows through alpine forest and clear streams to Muni-Gaon, a place with a police check post. After a refreshing stop continue southeast to near route of Jajarkot, and walk towards Bheri River.
Cross a bridge over a stream and enjoy the surrounding views and then a short walk to Naphu-Khona village for overnight camp in the back field of the village.

Morning starts passing a river through dense jungle, and then climb towards Maure-La at 3, 927 m. Enjoy the grand scenery of Bheri River Valley and the peaks of Ghyuthumba and Matathumba ranges appear before us.
From the top of Maure-La descend to Nauli Kharka for overnight camp around amazing meadows within forest surrounding.

An exciting day as morning starts with first glimpse of Kagmara high ridge and Bheri River. The path ahead leads across the hillside through a village of Chaurkot. Then walk descend through Rimi, and Kai-Gaon villages towards the left side of the river, following a nice path to Hurikot for overnight camp, beneath the high hill where monastery is located.

From Hurikot walk along the river to a village of strong Tibetan characteristic, as climb heads slowly to Garpung Khola to Jagdula Khola. A good trek few hour to reach a scenic spot facing views of Kagmara peak. As walk lead along the left bank of the river then cross a bridge to Garpung Khola, where overnight camp is pitched.

Today a short morning walk for lunch and overnight stop, start the trek crossing a bridge and follow the stream for few hours and then climb on a cliff side ridge along the side of a river, crossing several brides to reach Kagmara Phedi.
The campsite at Phedi offers amazing view of Kanjirowa Himal range, rest of the afternoon free to explore around this hidden corners of Lower Dolpo.

Start the morning early after breakfast for a big day to cross Kagmara-La Pass at
5, 115 m high. Walk on the right side of river bank, as the trail turns to hard ground below as climb continues to the top of Kagmara-La, the pass festooned with hundreds of prayer flags. Enjoy superb panorama of surrounding high peaks that surrounds the top. After reaching the first pass of the adventure, a slow descend to Lasa for overnight camp, situated below the pass on a flat grassy field near crystal clear stream.

Morning starts with gradual descend from Lasa to Pungmo following a trail close to a stream all the way, as well crossing several time the same smaller streams facing view of Kanjirowa Himal a peak at 6, 612 m high. As walk leads to a sparsely forested trail. The Himalayan blue sheep and wild fox can be spotted en route sometimes along with many bird species. A sharp downfall from Khyaru leads to the village of Pungmo for overnight camp.
A nice village with two Gompa / monasteries where both 'Bon' and 'traditional' Buddhism are practiced, a place with large monument called Chorten.
For interested people can hike to Gompa, walk on a wooden bridge below from the village. As trail follow a pine forest across a cliff to the Gompa. After spending some time around the Gompa, back down to Pungmo with rest of the afternoon at leisure till dinner time.

From here to our next main destination, walking to Ringmo close to attractive Phoksundo Lake. Route leads on the left side of a river, as climb starts for an hour to a Nepal Army camp, near Pungmo and Phoksundo Rivers.
The walk up to Ringmo is pleasant as enormous rock walls guards the upper valley, as out day ends on reaching Ringmo village for overnight stop near by the beautiful Phoksundo Lake. Enjoy views of enormous waterfall that flows from Phoksundo River.

Enjoy the rest full day after a tough hard trek, as well for acclimatization around the scenice Phoksundo Lake. On this day take a short hike and explore the beautiful surroundings, walk up to a hill from Ringmo and walk around serene turquoise colored Phoksundo Lake. The areas around surrounded by rocky hills and with reflection of Kanjirowa Himal 6, 612 m. Rest of the day explore the village of Ringmo and the Buddhist Monastery. Walk around, and observe the local culture of local culture and custom, how they dress with simple clothing that is dyed a maroon tint and wears Tibetan-style somba / dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for footwear. Both men and women often wear religious charms and cords of coral, amber, and turquoise.

After an enjoyable and interesting time at Ringmo village and Phoksundo Lake, today’s walk leads to other side of Dolpo area heading east by an alternative way crossing few passes of Baga-la and Numa-la. Morning walk leads past Muduwa village and the stream of Muduwa on a valley gorge to reach a small grazing area at Temche for overnight stop near Ghuchun Khola (stream).

Start the morning walk on gradual trail and then climb to cross over Baga-la at 5,169 meters high, with steep climb for more than three hours. On reaching on top of the pass, rewards with glorious panorama of Phoksundo Lake with Kagmara peaks. After reaching the second pass of the trek and with fascinating views a long descend to overnight camp at Danigar or Phedi, means bottom of a hill.

Morning walk continues to cross the last pass of the adventure over Numa-La South Ridge and a pass at 5,309 m high. This will be the highest spot of the adventure, climb over grassy slopes for near to three hours to reach on top of Numa-La. Enjoy grand views of Dhaulagiri mountain range and Kagmara peak with beautiful valleys down bellows includes scenery of dramatic surrounding landscapes. After an enjoyable moment descend to the base of the pass, then walk for few hours on gradual path to overnight camp on a summer pasture fields at the base or Phedi.

From here onward on the way back to Dunai and Jhupal, from the base of Numa-La, morning starts with steep climb to a small ridge offers views of Mt. Dhaulagiri range, and then descend to Modo valley, time permitting visit the monastery, here the trail from Upper and Lower Dolpo joins.
After Modo and Khanger few hours of good walk to Tokyu-Gaon for overnight, this is one of the most impressive and interesting village of Dolpa area, consist of more than ten villages and nice tended farm fields with old impressive monasteries.

After an exciting and pleasant overnight stop at Tokyu Gaon, morning walk downhill to Tarap Chu on a wide green valley, a scenic and longest valley around Dolpo area stretches about 20 km. As walk continues coming across Yak man temporary settlements, then finally ending the day on reaching at Dho Tarap for overnight stop. An interesting village inhabited by mixed people of Tibetan origin and Magar hill tribe of western Nepal.

From Dho Tarap, morning starts with long descend to Tarap valley, follows a river Tarap Chu most of the way till it joins Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village.
Walk past Langa a place with beautiful cascading waterfalls, then head due south on the trail to Sisaul and Kesila a small area of Yak herder temporary camps then to our overnight camp at Ghyamgar.

Today walks takes you on Tarap valley, as route enters a narrow gorge with some juniper and wild rose bushes, walk continues past Tol-Tol a place with a large overhanging cave. Around the area might spot some wild life like Naur or Blue Sheep and other animals.
As walk progress to the confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river after a long day walk of about six hours.

Start the morning walk past smaller villages and then into a small wooded area, following a river to near Tarakot, a large and interesting village with an old history and well maintained terraced farm fields. Tarakot with old fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village. The village houses famous old Sandul Gomba located on the junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River where our overnight camp is pitched.

After a wonderful time at Tarakot, last day journey leads to Dunai after walking for few hours then taking a drive to Dunai. The Headquarter town of Dolpo district after a refreshing stop drive continues following many spread out villages to Jhupal for last overnight stop. From here next morning flight take you to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

Morning walk to Jhupal small airport and then board in a small aircraft for short scenic flight to Nepalgunj facing views of Western Himalaya range of peaks.
At Nepalgunj for refreshing stop, and then board on connecting flight to Kathmandu. Where our great adventure concludes after a memorable adventure of wonderful experience around Nepal Far West Himalaya from Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trekking.
Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities and shopping souvenirs or join in for short tour around places of great interest.

A free day as contingency, in case of unfavorable bad weather that might lead to delay or cancellation of flight at Jhupal. As Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes even in best time of the year. If all goes well as per our standard itinerary, one can relax or join or join in for another tour around Kathmandu-Patan or Bhaktapur or enjoy individual activities.

01:When is the best time for Jumla to Lower Dolpo?

The best time for Upper or Lower Dolpo is spring from March to May, and autumn / fall begins from September to early November. These are the best times for pleasant walks and views.

02:How long is the trek is it a fixed departures?

The total days from arrival to final departures is 18 nights and 19 days, but the trekking portion is of two weeks. Yes it is a fixed departures, where dates is in progress. But we run and organize for private groups as well minimum of 2-3 persons. Where single person is not allowed as Dolpo falls on Restricted Area where minimum 2 people needs to join. Includes special trekking permits to enter Lower Dolpo.

03:What types of accommodation and food available on treks?

Accommodation in local lodges are simple but nice, clean and cozy but smaller rooms. But most trekking will be on tented camping. The foods served by camping cooks are nice. Serving Continental, Chinese, Indian, Tibetan and Nepal meals as per the menu provided. Sometime our cook will provide fresh bakery item also. The main preferred meals is Nepali Dal Bhat (boiled rice and lentil soup with seasonal vegetable and home-made hot sauce or mild pickle.
On camping all food served are set meals to make it easier as well to save time and fuel energy.

04:How high does the trek reaches to from what altitude?

The trek starts from Jumla at 2, 700 m at crossing Kagmara pass above 5,000 m passes to reach from one end of the valley to another beautiful area.

05:Is there places with electricity for charging electronic items?

Every village has hydroelectricity power, some smaller settlements like Jumla, and a few other areas with solar power where trekkers can charge their electronic items paying a fee per hour per item charged to the lodge owner.
But on leaving the main village from Jumla to Jhupal, the facilities electricity is very minimum or none at all. Where trekkers have to carry a small portable solar panel for charging the electronic items.

06:Can we get hot showers and single room on treks?

Yes, nearly all villages provide hot or cold showers and bathe with hot water in a large bucket. Extra charge for using the hot shower and bathing. But most places on route overnights in tented camps, where hot showers will not be available till
Jhupal is reached.
